Chelsea capitalized on a disastrous second-half collapse by Manchester United on Saturday, securing a 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge that deepened the crisis surrounding United manager Michael Carrick.

Morgan Rogers opened the scoring four minutes after halftime, racing through a gap between central defenders Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez to put the hosts ahead, ESPN reported. The visitors unravelled further when Martinez committed a reckless foul on Wesley Fofana inside the penalty box, earning a second yellow card and an ejection. Cole Palmer converted the resulting penalty kick, sealing the win for Chelsea while United played the final 28 minutes with 10 men.

Carrick Under Pressure as Slide Continues

The result extends Manchester United’s winless streak across all competitions to nine matches, marking their first run of nine games without a victory this century, according to Roundtable Sports. ESPN reported that United have suffered four defeats in their last five outings and have collected just seven points through their first nine Premier League matches of the campaign.

United had created significant opportunities to take the lead during the opening 45 minutes. Amad Diallo failed to convert three distinct chances, while team captain Bruno Fernandes also missed an opportunity to score, ESPN noted. However, the squad failed to recover after falling behind early in the second half.

Tensions flared following Martinez’s dismissal, with ESPN reporting that Carrick ignored the Argentine defender as he exited the pitch toward the locker room. The ejection came weeks after Martinez openly criticized the club’s summer transfer recruitment, ESPN reported.

Bleak Outlook for United Hierarchy

Carrick had remained in his role despite a 3-0 home defeat against AFC Bournemouth a week earlier, which represented the club’s worst start to a season since 1986. According to ESPN, the club’s leadership committee opted to retain Carrick to give him and the squad an opportunity to reverse their fortunes, bypassing several available managers including Eddie Howe, Antonio Conte, Kieran McKenna and Julian Nagelsmann.

United’s average of 0.77 points per match leaves the 20-time league champions in a precarious position near the bottom of the table, ESPN reported. Compounding their struggles, starting left back Luke Shaw and forward Benjamin Sesko remain sidelined by injuries, with the club facing financial limitations heading into the January transfer window.

Chelsea, managed by Xabi Alonso, entered the fixture looking to recover from a difficult stretch that included a 2-0 home loss to Tottenham Hotspur and a midweek penalty shootout elimination against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup, Roundtable Sports reported.

Manchester United now turn to European competition, facing Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday, where another match without a victory would equal their worst run of results in 75 years, according to ESPN. Following that clash, United will host Aston Villa in league play before traveling to face Liverpool after the upcoming international break.
