Detroit Lions linebacker Jack Campbell remained hospitalized on Monday for medical observation after suffering a frightening injury that left him motionless on the field during Detroit’s 19-15 win against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday at Ford Field.

The standout defender was strapped to a backboard and carted off the playing surface early in the fourth quarter after collaborating on a routine stop, NBC News reported. The Lions announced Sunday night that Campbell was resting comfortably at a Detroit-area medical facility and would stay overnight for continued observation and testing. The team had not released a formal diagnosis or timeline for his recovery as of Monday afternoon.

Tackle brings celebration to a halt

The scary scene unfolded on the opening snap of the fourth quarter. Minnesota quarterback Kyler Murray completed a 10-yard pass to tight end T.J. Hockenson, who was brought down along the sideline by Campbell and Detroit teammate Eric O’Neill, according to NBC News. Campbell appeared to lower his shoulder with proper technique, keeping his head upright, but his helmet seemed to strike Hockenson’s left hip, forcing his neck backward upon impact.

Campbell immediately fell face down on the Ford Field turf and did not move, prompting team medical personnel and independent trainers to sprint onto the field. Players from both sidelines watched in silence as medical staff stabilized Campbell’s neck, positioned him onto a stretcher, and drove him off the field on a motorized cart before transporting him to the hospital.

Detroit hung on to defeat the previously undefeated Vikings, but the emotional locker room celebration was muted by Campbell’s condition. Detroit head coach Dan Campbell, who is not related to the linebacker, paused the postgame remarks to ask the team to take a knee and pray for their injured teammate.

“Thoughts and prayers are with Jack and his family,” Dan Campbell said after the game. “He’s being taken care of. We don’t have any new information. We’ll keep you updated as this thing goes. But we are thinking about him.”

Lions face mounting injury toll

The All-Pro linebacker’s hospitalization was not the only physical blow sustained by Detroit during the physical divisional contest. Detroit Sports Nation reported that several other Lions players also suffered injuries during Sunday’s game, including defensive backs Brian Branch and D.J. Reed, along with DJ Wonnum and Jimmy Rolder.

The health questions come at a critical juncture as the Lions prepare for their Week 9 matchup against the Miami Dolphins. Dan Campbell was scheduled to address reporters at 3 p.m. ET on Monday afternoon, where reporters expected him to provide any available status reports on Jack Campbell and the rest of the banged-up roster.

Lions officials have reiterated that further medical findings will be released to the public once comprehensive evaluation results become available.
