Former undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez returns to boxing on Saturday, challenging undefeated WBC champion Christian Mbilli at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The scheduled 12-round clash marks Alvarez’s first outing since dropping a unanimous decision to Terence Crawford in September 2025. That defeat halted Alvarez’s reign atop the 168-pound division. After a 13-month absence, Alvarez enters as a challenger in a world title fight for the first time since moving up to challenge Dmitry Bivol in 2022, Fox News reported.

The Stakes at Super Middleweight

Alvarez (63-3-2, 39 KOs) is attempting to begin another championship run at age 36. Although he lost his belts last year, the Mexican star remains ranked as the No. 1 super middleweight by both ESPN and The Ring, according to The Tennessean. Alvarez has competed in 28 major world title fights throughout his career, compiling a 25-3 record in those bouts.

“I don’t believe in shortcuts. So I go straight (for) the champion,” Alvarez said during the final pre-fight press conference, as reported by The Tennessean. “I already have the experience. I’ve been a champion many years and I want to be a champion again and I want to face the best.”

Alvarez also addressed critics questioning his longevity. “My motivation is the love for the sport, and, like I say, I always break records when I need to show anybody anything,” Alvarez told DAZN via Sports Illustrated, as reported by The Sporting News. “And you know, they say I’m old and this and that, but they’re going to see.”

Mbilli (29-0-1, 24 KOs), a 31-year-old French-Cameroonian fighter, makes the first defense of his WBC crown. Outlets provided differing explanations for how the title became vacant following Crawford’s victory over Alvarez: The Tennessean reported Crawford retired, Yahoo Sports reported Crawford was stripped following a sanctioning fee dispute, and The Sporting News reported Crawford relinquished the belt. Mbilli had previously held the sanctioning body’s interim strap and fought to a split draw against Lester Martinez on the Alvarez-Crawford undercard in September 2025.

Tale of the Tape and Card Details

Mbilli brings physical advantages into the matchup, standing at 5-foot-8½ with a 72-inch reach compared to Alvarez’s 5-foot-7½ frame and 70½-inch reach, The Tennessean reported. Despite those physical disparities, sportsbooks have pegged Alvarez as the betting favorite, with DraftKings pricing Alvarez at -330 and Mbilli at +250.

The fight was previously targeted for Sept. 12, but Alvarez’s team requested a seven-week postponement because of a personal matter, Fox News reported. The event, backed by Saudi adviser Turki Alalshikh, moved forward Saturday despite calls from critics to cancel the show amid security concerns and attacks in the capital city, according to The Tennessean.

The pay-per-view card is broadcast globally on DAZN for $79.99 in the U.S. Ring walks for the main event are scheduled for roughly 4:30 p.m. ET (1:30 p.m. PT), depending on undercard results. Undercard action includes:

  • Jaime Munguia vs. Nikita Zon for the WBA super middleweight title
  • Rafael Espinoza defending his WBO featherweight title against Ricardo Blandon
  • David Picasso vs. Carl Jammes Martin
  • Reito Tsutsumi vs. Raymundo Rojas Garcia

Early preliminary action at Kingdom Arena saw Bek Nurmaganbet score a first-round knockout over Marcos Vazquez Rodriguez, Emiliano Rojo stop Flavius Biea by fourth-round technical knockout, and Brayan Leon defeat Hector Aguirre by unanimous decision, according to Yahoo Sports. What remains to be determined is whether Mbilli can cement his standing at the top of the division or if Alvarez will capture a super middleweight world title for the third time in his career.
