A sudden tornado swept across a construction site in the southern Turkish coastal city of Antalya, killing four laborers and injuring a fifth after demolishing temporary housing units, officials and local media reported Tuesday.

The vortex hit the Kepez district of Antalya, destroying residential containers where the workers were staying and toppling a heavy construction crane, Antalya Gov. Hulusi Sahin said. Three of the four workers killed were Syrian citizens, according to the governor.

Discrepancies over timing and toll

Accounts differed on the precise timing and sequence of the fatalities. According to reportage from JFeed and Yahoo News Canada, the twister slammed the site during the early morning hours of Tuesday. In contrast, Turkish Minute, citing the state-run Anadolu news agency, reported that the tornado tore through the site around 11 p.m. late Monday.

Turkish Minute reported that two workers died immediately at the scene while two others died after transport to a local hospital. The fifth worker suffered minor injuries and was in good condition, according to the Anadolu dispatch cited by Turkish Minute. Other outlets, including JFeed and Il Mattino, reported that authorities had not released immediate details regarding the condition of the injured laborer.

Governor Sahin inspected the wreckage and described the localized devastation as highly unusual, noting that the rest of the surrounding metropolitan area emerged unscathed.

“We are facing a very unusual natural phenomenon because there have been no reports of storms or tornadoes anywhere else in the city. There is no damage to the surrounding buildings, but we have a tornado that destroyed two containers in this particular area,” Sahin told reporters.

Sahin confirmed that while the storm brought down a large crane, the falling equipment did not cause any deaths or injuries.

Warnings and weather patterns

The lethal twister arrived amid heightened weather advisories. The Turkish State Meteorological Service issued warnings ahead of the event, Yahoo News Canada reported. According to Turkish Minute, the agency issued an advisory on Sunday predicting heavy rainfall and potential tornadoes in Antalya for Monday, followed by a second warning Monday afternoon that alerted residents to anticipated flash flooding, fierce winds and potential tornadoes extending into Tuesday.

Tornadoes occasionally form along Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, but meteorologists and local authorities consider fatal encounters exceedingly uncommon in the region. The tragedy follows another bout of fatal weather earlier in the month, when severe flooding in Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city, killed eight people.

Upcoming international summit

The fatal storm struck Antalya just weeks before the resort city is scheduled to convene world leaders and diplomats. Antalya is slated to host the United Nations COP31 climate summit next month, drawing international scrutiny to weather extremes across the Mediterranean basin.

Emergency medical personnel, police and firefighters remained active at the building site following the disaster. Municipal officials have not indicated whether additional structural inspections will be mandated for other temporary worker housing facilities in the Kepez district.
