Sri Lankan water management officials issued minor flood warnings on Monday for low-lying regions along both the Mahaweli River and the Kalu Ganga following intense rainfall across upper catchment areas.
The Irrigation Department announced the alerts after monitoring rainfall patterns and elevated river gauges, urging communities in vulnerable zones to remain on high alert and prepare for rising water levels, according to reporting by Newswire and the Daily Mirror.
Mahaweli River Basin under 24-hour alert
The alert for the Mahaweli River specifically targets low-lying communities situated within the Pasbage Korale Divisional Secretariat Division, Newswire reported. Substantial precipitation recorded during recent hours rapidly increased the threat of overflowing waters in nearby floodplains.
Department officials posted the Mahaweli warning at 11:30 a.m. local time on Monday, Oct. 26. The alert is scheduled to stay in effect until 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 27, covering a full 24-hour cycle of potential hydrological danger.
Residents living in close proximity to the Mahaweli riverbanks were advised to exercise extreme vigilance and implement defensive safety measures to protect life and property. Drivers using roads that traverse the vulnerable division were also warned to travel with heightened care due to possible road submergence.
Multiple districts face Kalu Ganga flood threat
A separate minor flood warning covers low-lying territory bordering the Kalu Ganga, where persistent downpours across the river basin have pushed stream gauges higher, the Daily Mirror reported. The alert projects possible flooding across parts of the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces over the coming 24 hours.
In the Ratnapura District, officials identified six divisional areas facing immediate flood hazards:
- Pelmadulla
- Nivithigala
- Ratnapura
- Kuruwita
- Ayagama
- Elapatha
Downstream in the Kalutara District, the warning extends across seven key administrative sectors:
- Ingiriya
- Horana
- Dodangoda
- Millaniya
- Bulathsinhala
- Madurawala
- Palindanuwara
Irrigation specialists derived the Kalu Ganga warning from real-time evaluations of local rainfall amounts combined with hydrologic data collected from river gauging stations across the river network, according to the Daily Mirror.
Safety advisories and official response
Across both river basins, government water authorities called on local drivers, commuters and property owners to take defensive steps against rapidly shifting water conditions. Commuters were cautioned that localized flooding could make transportation corridors hazardous or impassable.
In addition to public advisories, the Irrigation Department formally requested that regional disaster management agencies enact prompt precautionary measures to maintain public safety, secure critical transport routes and monitor drainage systems.
Authorities have not yet announced whether water levels have crested or if further warnings will be required once the current 24-hour alert periods expire on Tuesday.
