TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney used his postgame news conference on Saturday night to sharply condemn an aerial banner targeting Florida State coach Mike Norvell, calling the pregame stunt disrespectful and embarrassing after the Tigers secured a 36-24 road win.
Before kickoff at Doak Campbell Stadium on Oct. 31, a plane flew overhead trailing a sign that read “FSU: Fire Novell + Peter Collins,” referring to both the Seminoles coach and the university’s Board of Trustees chair. The sign drew widespread attention for omitting the letter “r” from Norvell’s last name.
Swinney Defends Rival Coach
Unprompted by reporters, Swinney addressed the display following the game, criticizing whoever funded the flight for taking personal aim at Norvell while student-athletes prepared to play.
“That was embarrassing what I saw above the stadium. Florida State’s better than that. That’s not good for these kids,” Swinney said, according to ESPN. “They didn’t even spell his name right. Didn’t even have the freaking R in the name. It’s just disrespectful.”
Swinney went on to praise Norvell’s character and noted the personal burden public attacks impose on coaches and their loved ones.
“Mike Norvell is a good man. He’s a husband. He’s a father,” Swinney said, as reported by TigerNet and HEAVY. “I don’t know where we became this as a society, where it’s OK to tear people down. It’s like a blood sport now. You lose a game, fire everybody. Everybody stinks. How about we just support the kids.”
The victory gave Swinney 117 regular-season wins in Atlantic Coast Conference play, tying the league record established by former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden, HEAVY reported.
Mounting Pressure in Tallahassee
Norvell has faced sustained scrutiny amid a steep downturn for Florida State. After going 13-0 in the 2023 regular season and capturing the ACC title, the Seminoles have gone 10-22 since the beginning of the 2024 campaign, according to ESPN. Saturday’s defeat dropped the team to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in conference games, leaving Norvell with a 41-39 mark in his seven seasons leading the program.
University President Richard McCullough sent a letter to supporters on Oct. 27 acknowledging fan dissatisfaction and pledging adjustments, while encouraging fans to continue backing the players, On3 reported.
When asked about fans leaving early as Clemson built a lead, Norvell focused on the outcome rather than the aerial message.
“You’ve got to win, that’s what it comes down to,” Norvell said, according to ESPN. “I understand the frustration. We have high expectations for what we want it to be. I believe in these players and the choice that they made to come be a part of this program.”
Financial Hurdles to a Change
Any potential move to replace Norvell would carry significant financial consequences for the university. Reports differ on the precise cost of buying out his contract: USA TODAY Sports reported the figure stands at $47.7 million if executed before Dec. 1, 2026, while ClutchPoints cited an estimate of approximately $51 million before the conclusion of the 2026 season.
Clemson moved to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in ACC play with the win, sealed late in the contest by a 79-yard touchdown run from quarterback Tait Reynolds, according to HEAVY. Florida State now faces questions about its coaching leadership as it prepares to finish the final month of the regular season.
