ARLINGTON, Texas — Chad Ryland kicked a 42-yard field goal in overtime on Sunday to lift the Arizona Cardinals to a dramatic 33-30 comeback win against the Dallas Cowboys, keeping the franchise undefeated all-time at AT&T Stadium.
Ryland redeemed himself on the winning kick after pushing an extra point wide left with six seconds remaining in regulation, snapping a streak of 58 consecutive successful point-after attempts, The Guardian reported. The miss came directly after Arizona orchestrated an eight-play, 80-yard drive in just under a minute, tying the score at 30-30 when Gardner Minshew completed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Michael Wilson.
Allgeier sparks second-half resurgence
Dallas led 14-3 at halftime and built a two-touchdown cushion early in the fourth quarter before Arizona mounted its rally, according to NBC Sports and The Guardian. The Cardinals stayed within striking distance thanks to running back Tyler Allgeier, who accumulated 191 yards from scrimmage, including 147 rushing yards and 44 receiving yards. All but seven of his total yards came after halftime.
Allgeier ignited the surge with a career-long 63-yard touchdown run. He later added a 50-yard scamper that set up his own five-yard scoring reception, turning momentum against a Dallas defense that had contained Arizona for three quarters before faltering down the stretch.
The loss dropped the Cowboys to 3-5 on the season, while Arizona also moved to 3-5. The victory marked the Cardinals’ fifth consecutive win over Dallas and improved their record to 5-0 at AT&T Stadium since the venue opened in 2009, according to The Guardian.
First-half control slips away from Dallas
Dallas entered Sunday fresh off a Monday night victory over the Philadelphia Eagles, while all 10 analysts in the NFL preview video had predicted a Cowboys victory, Cards Wire reported. For much of the afternoon, the game followed that script.
The Cowboys took control late in the first half following an interception by Shemar James, who picked off Arizona quarterback Jacoby Brissett and returned the ball 33 yards to the Arizona five-yard line, NBC Sports reported. On the next possession, Dallas running back Javonte Williams fumbled at the goal line, but tight end James Mitchell recovered the loose ball in the end zone for a touchdown. Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott also connected on a nine-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Flournoy.
Arizona struggled to capitalize on early opportunities in the first two quarters. Jeremiyah Love was stopped on fourth-and-goal from the one-yard line by Kenny Clark and Caleb Downs, NBC Sports reported. Love later exited the contest with an ankle injury, while running back Bam Knight was also helped off the field following a late first-half fumble.
The Cowboys’ defense surrendered only a 37-yard Ryland field goal in the first half and preserved the double-digit advantage until the final 16 minutes, when Allgeier and Minshew broke through against the Dallas front.
What comes next
Both teams emerge from the weekend with 3-5 records, remaining in the thick of the NFC wild-card chase. Dallas must regroup defensively after blowing a fourth-quarter double-digit lead at home, while Arizona heads into the second half of the season having secured its fifth consecutive win against the Cowboys franchise.
