Lifestyle guru Martha Stewart responded to widespread criticism Sunday after posting and rapidly removing a social media photo that showed her dressed as a homeless person for Halloween.
The 85-year-old television personality and entrepreneur shared the image Saturday as part of an Instagram carousel promoting her line of QVC candles, Page Six reported. The photo showed Stewart with dirt smeared across her face, dressed in torn clothing, standing outdoors with two dogs while holding a sign reading, “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!”
Social media backlash and swift removal
Although the post was removed shortly after publication, users captured screenshots that rapidly circulated across online platforms, including Reddit, where critics voiced intense frustration. Multiple users labeled the portrayal insensitive and criticized the multimillionaire businesswoman for appearing to trivialize poverty, according to Page Six and Just Jared.
According to Just Jared, the image was no longer visible on her primary Instagram account shortly after being posted, though questions initially circulated among online commenters about whether the account had been compromised or if the picture was digitally altered.
Stewart addresses the controversy
In a statement sent to Page Six through her representative on Sunday, Stewart expressed dismay over the public reaction, asserting that her costume was not meant to mock those experiencing hardship.
“I am distressed that my Halloween costume yesterday, which was intended to bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness, has offended people, which was never my intention,” Stewart said in the statement.
Stewart further highlighted her historical philanthropic efforts, stating that homelessness “continues to remain one of America’s greatest challenges and ongoing crises, something that I care deeply about and I have spent a significant amount of time and effort supporting charities that combat this ongoing social epidemic.” She added that she remains “committed to continuing to make a difference,” Rolling Stone reported.
A longtime fan of Halloween
Stewart also reflected on her history with the holiday, describing Halloween as “one of [her] favorite holidays of the year,” the New York Post reported. She noted that she has “spent decades teaching others how to celebrate Halloween — sharing fun, festive recipes, providing unique craft ideas, and giving tips on entertaining and hosting.”
Over several decades, Stewart has earned a reputation for elaborate and theatrical holiday displays. In previous years, she has dressed up as Queen Elizabeth I, a comic book character, a haunted horsewoman and a glamorous sorceress, frequently partnering on holiday projects with entertainment figures such as Snoop Dogg, according to Page Six.
The controversy did not keep Stewart away from social media for long. By Sunday morning, she had resumed regular posting on Instagram, sharing an update focusing on cooking with saffron, Rolling Stone reported.
