A 76-year-old motorist faces multiple felony counts after driving into a large group of bicyclists in Wake County, North Carolina, killing one rider and injuring 20 others on Saturday morning, authorities reported.

The collision took place shortly after 9:30 a.m. on Optimist Farm Road near Talicud Trail, roughly 14 miles southwest of Raleigh. According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, about 30 riders from the Capital Cycling Club were traveling together when an oncoming black Infiniti veered across the center line directly into their path.

First responders identified the deceased cyclist as Patrick Turner, 63, of Cary, who died at the scene. Holly Springs Fire Chief LeRoy Smith told local media that seven other cyclists suffered serious trauma and were taken to area hospitals, while another 13 riders sustained minor wounds.

Suspect Arrested After Vehicle Found in Ditch

Following the initial impact, the driver crossed back into the travel lane and fled the scene, continuing along the roadway for about half a mile before veering off the left shoulder and crashing into a ditch, state troopers reported. First responders arriving in the area reported that the motorist was seen stumbling outside the disabled vehicle.

Troopers took Donald Robert Morris-Jones, 76, of Apex, into custody. Law enforcement agencies said impairment is suspected to have played a role in the deadly wreck. Wake County inmate records show Morris-Jones was booked into the Wake County Detention Center under a $1 million secured bond.

Court records cited by WRAL indicate Morris-Jones faces a slate of criminal counts, including driving while impaired, felony death by vehicle, seven counts of felony serious injury by vehicle, eight counts of felony hit-and-run, reckless driving and driving left of center. Despite having no previous criminal record, court documents described him as an overwhelming danger to society, WRAL reported.

Community Responds to Tragic Morning Ride

The injured victims were taken to regional medical facilities, including WakeMed Cary, WakeMed Raleigh and UNC Health Holly Springs, according to ABC11. A specialized Wake County EMS bus was deployed to help evaluate and transport the high number of wounded riders from the crash site. An arrest warrant reviewed by local stations listed injuries that included bone fractures, damaged ribs and severe lacerations.

Club participants told local reporters that Optimist Farm Road is a regular route frequented by local cycling packs on weekend mornings. Local resident Bob Schroder, a former cyclist who lives close to the intersection, voiced shock over the devastation.

“It’s sad that this happens. I have sympathy for all the people who got hurt, and I hope the remaining survivors stay that way and that they live through this,” Schroder told WRAL.

Optimist Farm Road was closed for hours while collision reconstruction specialists processed the site, though authorities confirmed the roadway reopened late Saturday afternoon. The State Highway Patrol continues to lead the investigation into the crash, and updated medical conditions for the hospitalized cyclists have not yet been released.
