BATON ROUGE, La. — First lady Melania Trump traveled to Louisiana State University on Saturday to announce a multimillion-dollar scholarship fund for students who were raised in foster care, appearing on campus and inside Tiger Stadium ahead of the school’s rivalry matchup against Alabama.
The appearance highlighted the first lady’s Fostering the Future initiative, an outgrowth of the Be Best campaign she started during Donald Trump’s first presidential term. University leaders and donors gathered at Patrick F. Taylor Hall to celebrate the establishment of a permanent endowment valued at more than $7.2 million.
Millions Raised for Former Foster Youths
The scholarship fund received a foundational $5 million pledge from Baton Rouge-based electrical contractor MMR Group and its leader, LSU alumnus James B. “Pepper” Rutland, Fox News reported. An additional $2.2 million came from 75 donors to the LSU Foundation, according to foundation president and chief executive Krista Raney.
LSU President Wade Rousse noted that the $5 million lead donation alone will produce roughly $200,000 each year to help recipients pay for tuition, campus housing, textbooks and mandatory fees.
“This achievement will give young people from foster care an anchor of stability, a strong educational foundation, and a chance to build a wonderful life,” Trump told the crowd.
The first lady reported that LSU currently enrolls 14 students backed by the initiative, while Alabama counts nine among its student body. Across the country, 26 universities support 100 participants in the program this semester, the New York Post reported.
Rivalry Atmosphere and Strict Security
Trump’s trip brought high-profile pageantry and tight protection to Baton Rouge. The LSU athletics department coordinated with the U.S. Secret Service and regional police agencies, sealing off internal campus roads starting at 5 a.m. and enforcing strict security checkpoints at all stadium entrances, local station WBRZ reported.
On campus, university officials presented Trump with a personalized purple-and-gold football jersey, a customized helmet displaying her initiative’s emblem and a commemorative football presented by former Tigers coach Ed Orgeron, Fox News reported. Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry, state first lady Sharon Landry and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise attended the morning ceremony.
The campaign extended directly onto the field at Tiger Stadium, where LSU and Alabama clashed in a high-stakes Southeastern Conference meeting. LSU players wore special Be Best jersey patches and helmet decals, while a ceremonial check presentation took place on the field alongside the school mascot, Mike the Tiger. The first lady also appeared on the stadium videoboard during pregame festivities, drawing cheers from the packed stands.
Federal Legislative Efforts
Saturday’s announcement followed earlier administrative and legislative pushes by the first lady to aid older youths aging out of state custody. President Donald Trump signed an executive order last November directing partnerships among federal departments, higher education institutions and private businesses, according to the New York Post.
Trump also testified before the House Ways and Means Committee in April, urging lawmakers to update federal foster care programs. That legislative measure successfully passed the House of Representatives but remains pending before the Senate.
