PARIS — World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz and fourth-ranked Ben Shelton advanced to the final of the Rolex Paris Masters on Saturday, setting up a high-stakes rematch of their dramatic late-night battle at Flushing Meadows earlier this fall.

Alcaraz claimed his spot in his first career final at the indoor tournament by defeating Norway’s Casper Ruud 6-4, 6-4. Shelton, the top-ranked American man, earned his place earlier in the day by rallying past French fan favorite Luca Van Assche 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.

Sunday’s title match marks the fifth career meeting between the two players. Although Alcaraz holds a 3-1 lead in their head-to-head series, Shelton won their most recent duel, taking a five-set thriller in the U.S. Open quarterfinals that concluded at 3:34 a.m. in September.

Dominant Serves and Fast Conditions

Alcaraz entered the French capital on an eight-match winning streak following a title run at the Vienna Open last week. Against Ruud, the seven-time major champion converted a single service break in each set and faced no break points of his own.

Accounts differed on the precise duration of Alcaraz’s semifinal victory, with The Independent reporting the contest took 97 minutes, while the BBC timed it at 86 minutes. The victory followed an exhausting quarterfinal battle on Friday in which Alcaraz saved two match points to defeat American Taylor Fritz.

The 23-year-old Spaniard acknowledged that the brisk indoor hard courts in Paris have traditionally presented challenges for his style. Speaking courtside to Sky Sports, Alcaraz said, “Difficult conditions to be honest for me. The speed of the court does not suit my game but I try my best to adapt the best I can.”

Looking ahead to facing Shelton, Alcaraz added, “It is probably one of the most difficult challenges I can face in tennis right now. He has a big serve, from the baseline he is playing really solidly, really strong physically.”

Shelton’s Gritty Comeback

Shelton showed resolve in his own semifinal, falling behind a break at 3-1 in the final set before rattling off four consecutive games against the unseeded Van Assche to take command of the match. The win makes Shelton the first American man to reach the singles final in Paris since 2017, according to the BBC.

“I know there is always going to be some little chance I can execute,” Shelton said after his match. “If I can be brave and keep winning my serve and stick with the guy, I feel there is a small window.”

The 24-year-old American has compiled a career-best 45 match wins in 2026 and finished as the runner-up at the U.S. Open. Adding an intriguing subplot to the championship, Shelton has enlisted Alcaraz’s former coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, to his team.

Praising his upcoming opponent, Shelton remarked, “Obviously Carlos is in amazing form. He’s a young legend in our sport already and any match he is in is blockbuster.”

Looking Ahead to Championship Sunday

Both competitors will attempt to secure significant personal milestones on Sunday afternoon. Alcaraz is seeking his first Masters 1000 crown of 2026 after missing nearly five months of the season due to a wrist injury. Shelton is chasing his first Masters 1000 title.

The championship match is scheduled to begin no earlier than 3 p.m. local time (9 a.m. EST) on Sunday, with both competitors set to travel to Turin, Italy, later this month for the season-ending ATP Finals.
