TAMPA, Fla. — Thomas Markle Sr., the estranged father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, was arrested by federal agents in Florida and charged with possession of child pornography, the U.S. Department of Justice announced.
Markle, 82, was taken into custody Friday morning after FBI agents arrived at his memory care facility, according to reporting from Fox News. He made an initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Tampa later that day, where a federal magistrate judge ordered him placed on house arrest at the facility where he resides, CNN reported. News outlets differed on the financial conditions of his release, with Fox News reporting he was freed without bond and the New York Post reporting he was released on bond.
Search Warrants and Evidence
Prosecutors alleged that Markle stored illicit images depicting prepubescent girls inside two Los Angeles-area storage lockers that he had leased since 2008. Federal agents executed search warrants on the units and seized roughly 78 items, including books, slides and film negatives containing suspected child sexual abuse material, CNN reported.
According to a federal criminal complaint obtained by news organizations, one retrieved image depicts a clothed adult male touching a nude child inappropriately on his lap. An acquaintance later identified Markle as the man in the photograph, the complaint stated. Prosecutors also noted that details in other recovered photos matched a motel chain located in the Philippines.
Markle denied the accusations in comments to the Daily Mail when allegations first emerged in October, saying, “I could never do what I’m being accused of. It’s the worst thing anyone could accuse me of.” If convicted of the single count of possessing child pornography, he faces a statutory maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison, according to prosecutors.
Global Inquiry and Family Fallout
The arrest followed a multifaceted investigation across multiple borders. In late October, Markle’s son, Thomas Markle Jr., reported finding thousands of questionable images inside boxes at his father’s former residence in Cebu, Philippines, and notified both local police and the FBI, according to reports in The Sun cited by news outlets.
Philippine authorities subsequently opened a probe into the elder Markle. Philippine Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla previously indicated that investigators would examine whether the son was involved after receiving witness claims about minors visiting a home linked to the inquiry. However, Page Six reported Saturday that Philippine police have since cleared Thomas Markle Jr. and extended an apology after briefly naming him as a person of interest.
Markle Sr. has been publicly estranged from his royal daughter since the weeks surrounding her May 2018 marriage to Prince Harry, when controversies erupted over staged paparazzi pictures. In October, after the initial claims in the Philippines emerged, Meghan issued a statement explaining her long-standing estrangement from her father.
“I hope it can now be understood that, despite certain media publications’ distortion over the years, any distance from my father and my choice to not allow him to have contact with our children, was for one reason: to protect them,” Meghan said in the statement shared with Fox News Digital.
A representative for Meghan and Prince Harry told news organizations on Friday that the couple had “no comment” regarding Markle Sr.’s arrest by federal authorities.
Next Steps in the Case
Citing Markle’s advanced age, health complications and memory troubles, the presiding judge ordered a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation to assess whether he is competent to comprehend the proceedings and assist in his legal defense, CNN reported.
Markle has not entered a plea. His formal arraignment in the Central District of California has not yet been placed on the court docket and will likely take several weeks to schedule, according to federal prosecutors.
