Apple has inadvertently disclosed documentation for an unreleased tablet accessory on its French regulatory portal, signaling that an updated iPad mini may be nearing its public debut, MacRumors reported Thursday. The filing identifies an unannounced Smart Folio case with model number A3632, a designation that does not match any current or prior accessories designed for the compact tablet line.

The regulatory entry carries a date of Sept. 8, 2026, and is positioned alongside accessory filings for the iPhone 18 Pro family, according to 9to5Mac. The publication noted that the sixth-generation and seventh-generation models shared the same physical case dimensions, meaning the creation of an entirely new Smart Folio indicates Apple has made physical changes to the next iteration of the device.

Environmental data included in the filing suggests modified internal hardware. Apple’s documentation shows the new cover contains at least three percent recycled materials, a decrease from nine percent in the prior version, while rare earth elements rose from 3,947 milligrams to 6,610 milligrams. The substantial jump in rare earth elements points toward altered magnetic alignment points on the tablet itself.

Expected hardware updates and redesign

The regulatory discovery aligns with growing reports that Apple is preparing a comprehensive overhaul of its smallest tablet. According to Bloomberg News and specialized tech outlets, Apple plans to shift the iPad mini from an LCD panel to an OLED display, adopting visual technology previously reserved for higher-tier iPads.

Additional rumored upgrades include Apple’s A20 Pro processor, thinner display borders, improved water resistance, and an upgraded speaker layout, 9to5Mac reported. The front-facing camera is also expected to move to a landscape edge, optimizing the tablet for horizontal video meetings and content consumption, according to The Apple Post.

Uncertainty remains regarding the tablet’s refresh rate. While Apple has explored whether to add its 120Hz ProMotion technology, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman stated that the company tested both 60Hz and higher-refresh configurations. Leaker yeux1122 recently reiterated that the device will remain limited to a standard 60Hz OLED panel.

Potential price hike and launch timeline

The extensive hardware redesign may also lead to a noticeable price adjustment. While the current 128-gigabyte model powered by the A17 Pro processor starts at $599, industry reporting indicates the new model could see a price hike of roughly $200, Mashable reported. Gurman noted that pricing in the U.S. could approach $799, shifting the tablet into a more premium product tier.

A formal debut could arrive before the end of the month. Gurman reported that Apple has invited select media representatives to an all-day product launch event scheduled for Oct. 28 in Los Angeles, where the company is expected to showcase the compact tablet alongside touchscreen MacBook models and computers powered by M6 processors. MacRumors previously indicated the device could be introduced on Oct. 27 or 28.

Apple has not publicly commented on the regulatory listing, the rumored hardware features, or pricing. Whether the upcoming tablet adopts a 120Hz display or carries the anticipated $799 price tag will remain unconfirmed until Apple formally reveals the device.
