URBANA-CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The Oregon Ducks suffered their third loss of the season Saturday, falling 21-10 to the Illinois Fighting Illini and placing head coach Dan Lanning under mounting pressure to fix an offense that has stalled against conference opponents.

The defeat dropped Oregon to 4-3 on the season and marked the program’s first loss to Illinois in 56 years, Bleacher Report reported. Despite carrying a 10-7 lead into halftime and outgaining the Illini 426 yards to 314 overall, Oregon was shut out over the final two quarters.

Offensive Coordinator Scrutiny

Facing questions after the game about whether he would consider a change at offensive coordinator, Lanning refused to rule out a move regarding Drew Mehringer.

“I think all things are on the table for us to make sure that we’re the best version of ourselves. We’re currently not that. That’s very clear.”
— Dan Lanning, Oregon head coach

Oregon’s offense converted just four of 15 third-down opportunities, according to ClutchPoints. With starting quarterback Dante Moore sidelined for a third straight contest due to a concussion, backup Dylan Raiola completed 66 percent of his passes for 246 yards. However, Ducks Wire reported that Raiola missed several open reads and committed a turnover on a lost fumble. Though the rushing attack produced 180 yards on 5.6 yards per carry, questionable decisions and stalled possessions repeatedly snuffed out momentum.

Special teams also faltered during critical moments. Kicker Gage Hurych missed three of his four field goal attempts, squandering multiple chances to keep pace on the scoreboard.

Defensive Struggles in the Second Half

While Oregon controlled the yardage battle early, Illinois took control on the ground after the break. The Illini rushed for 225 yards in the contest, possessing the ball for 18 minutes and 36 seconds in the second half, Ducks Wire reported. Illinois backup quarterback Michael Clayton II, playing in place of the injured Katin Houser, delivered two passing touchdowns to seal the victory for head coach Bret Bielema’s squad.

Lanning pointed to a breakdown in execution and defensive effort as the Illini wore down Oregon at the line of scrimmage.

“I don’t think we had the same relentless effort in the second half,” Lanning told reporters, as reported by Ducks Wire. “We weren’t winning at the line of scrimmage. When we turn on the tape, we’re going to see some technique that wasn’t there that needs to be there. We’re going to see some opportunities where guys are counting on other guys to make a play and not running to the ball like their hair’s on fire.”

Roster Depleted by Injuries and Absences

The Ducks entered the matchup missing key contributors on the perimeter. Receivers Jalen Lott and Messiah Hampton did not make the road trip, while standout Evan Stewart remained out due to an injury while facing a driving under the influence of intoxicants charge that disrupted the team’s weekly preparation, Ducks Wire reported. Lanning stated postgame that he anticipates having the missing players back next week.

The loss marks a steep tumble for a team that entered the season ranked No. 2 in the AP Top 25 poll, representing the highest preseason ranking in school history, Bleacher Report noted. After reaching the College Football Playoff semifinals in January and securing consecutive 13-win campaigns over the prior two seasons, Oregon’s postseason aspirations now appear dim.

Oregon returns home to Autzen Stadium to face the 6-1 Northwestern Wildcats on Halloween, aiming to halt its slide while Lanning and his staff reassess the direction of their offense.
