LEEDS, England — Substitute Noah Okafor scored in the 79th minute to lift Leeds United to a 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday at Elland Road, halting the visitors’ recent surge in Premier League action.

Tottenham had entered the contest seeking to extend a four-match unbeaten run, which included three straight league victories, according to Cartilage Free Captain and GOAL.com. Instead, manager Roberto De Zerbi’s squad struggled to break through a determined Leeds defense before a defensive lapse cleared the way for Okafor’s decisive close-range finish.

Spurs Control Possession but Stumble in Attack

Spurs dominated territorial possession, holding 61 percent of the ball and compiling more than 500 passes over the course of the match, GOAL.com reported. Despite that territorial control, Tottenham produced just seven total shots and failed to unlock Leeds’ low defensive block.

Advanced metrics further illustrated Tottenham’s attack troubles. Spurs recorded an expected goals tally of just 1.19, while Leeds created quality counter-attacking chances to total an expected goals metric of 2.49, according to GOAL.com. Leeds made 59 clearances on the day to keep the visiting frontline contained.

Tottenham experienced early disruption when attacker Mathys Tel was forced off in the 43rd minute, bringing Dominic Solanke on as a substitute. The game grew increasingly contentious, with De Zerbi himself receiving a yellow card in the 51st minute along with several of his players during an intense second half, GOAL.com reported.

Okafor Provides Decisive Spark

Leeds manager Daniel Farke included Okafor among his substitutes following the forward’s recovery from an injury, Leeds United club media reported before kickoff. That decision paid dividends late in the match.

With 11 minutes remaining in regulation, Okafor capitalized on breakdown in the Tottenham penalty box, finishing with precision past the goalkeeper to put the hosts in front. Tottenham pressed for an equalizer in the closing stages, bringing on Dejan Kulusevski and Tyrese Hall as part of late tactical adjustments, but failed to find the target against a packed defense.

Tottenham defender Jan Paul van Hecke nearly leveled the score with a header off a corner kick that Leeds goalkeeper James Trafford pushed wide, while second-half substitute Conor Gallagher sent a low attempt flashing past the post, Cartilage Free Captain reported.

Looking Ahead

The defeat leaves Tottenham entering the two-week international break on a sour note after working its way into the top half of the table following a difficult start to the campaign, SB Nation reported. Upon returning to action, Spurs will face upcoming Premier League matchups against Ipswich Town and Sunderland, Cartilage Free Captain reported.

Leeds, which honored Remembrance Day with military service members in attendance before kickoff, carries momentum into the international break after collecting all three points on home soil.
