Defending champions Arsenal expanded their cushion at the top of the Premier League table to six points on Saturday, edging past Hull City 1-0 at Emirates Stadium before title rivals Manchester City stumbled at Nottingham Forest.
Gunners captain Martin Odegaard scored the decisive goal in the 72nd minute, converting a rebound from close range after Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis failed to secure a curling strike from winger Noni Madueke. The victory moved Arsenal to 27 points from 10 matches, according to AFP, while Hull remains mired in the lower half of the standings.
Patience rewarded at the Emirates
Arsenal dominated possession throughout the afternoon but struggled to carve out clear openings against a disciplined Hull defense. The hosts thought they had earned an opportunity to open the scoring late in the first half when Kai Havertz was pulled down by Hull’s Nobel Mendy inside the penalty area. However, a video assistant referee review determined that Havertz had wandered into an offside position during the buildup, waving off the penalty claim.
Odegaard finally broke the deadlock with his first goal since early September. Madueke cut inside from the right wing to test Tzolakis with a low drive. When the Greek goalkeeper spilled the ball in front of goal, Odegaard pounced to seal Arsenal’s third 1-0 triumph in their last four league fixtures.
Manager Mikel Arteta retained the same starting lineup that defeated Liverpool the previous weekend, fielding a back four of Riccardo Calafiori, Gabriel, Ezri Konsa and Jurrien Timber. Defender William Saliba, who has not featured since sustaining a back injury in the World Cup semifinals four months ago, was not named to the bench despite training and traveling with the squad earlier in the week, USA TODAY Sports reported.
“We can still be much better, and we will improve in many phases, and we will get certain relationships to a different level that will be even more efficient,” Arteta said, as reported by AFP. “That’s the next step, to have bigger margins and when we have them, the opportunities, put them away to make sure that we don’t have to hang in there the last few minutes.”
Manchester City stumbles at the City Ground
Arsenal’s narrow triumph became significantly more valuable hours later when second-placed Manchester City collapsed to a 3-1 defeat against Nottingham Forest. Forest entered Saturday’s match having failed to score a single Premier League goal at home this season, but stormed into an early 2-0 lead through Jair Cunha and Liam Delap.
City midfielder Rayan Cherki halved the deficit after halftime with a sharp strike into the roof of the net. Forest responded in the 73rd minute when Delap scored his second goal of the day, driving a left-footed effort past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. The loss marked a third consecutive Premier League defeat for manager Enzo Maresca’s side, which sits six points behind Arsenal entering the November international break.
Other action across the Premier League
Elsewhere around the league on Saturday, Leeds United halted Tottenham’s three-match winning streak with a 1-0 home victory. Substitute Noah Okafor struck the winner in the 79th minute at Elland Road. Tottenham lost winger Mathys Tel to an injury late in the first half following an unpunished tackle by Jayden Bogle that survived a VAR red-card review.
At Craven Cottage, Fulham rallied late to secure a 1-1 draw against Newcastle United. Jacob Murphy seemed to have handed the visitors a crucial victory with an 80th-minute goal, but substitute Rodrigo Muniz leveled the score three minutes later.
The weekend’s results also carried major ramifications at the bottom of the table. Nottingham Forest’s unexpected victory pushed Manchester United, managed by Michael Carrick, into the relegation zone ahead of their Sunday clash against Aston Villa.
