IOWA CITY, Iowa — The Iowa Hawkeyes secured the Heartland Trophy for the fifth consecutive time Saturday, blanking No. 25 Wisconsin 30-0 at Kinnick Stadium behind a dominant defensive effort and an efficient performance from quarterback Hank Brown.
The victory gave Iowa (6-2, 3-2 Big Ten) back-to-back shutout victories over Wisconsin for the first time in the 100-game history of the rivalry, following a 37-0 win over the Badgers last season, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. It also marked Iowa’s longest winning streak in the series since winning 10 straight games from 1986 to 1995.
Dominant defense stifles Badgers
Iowa recorded its third shutout of the season by holding Wisconsin (5-3, 3-2 Big Ten) to 235 yards of total offense and nine first downs, Hawk Central reported. The Badgers converted just 4 of 13 third-down attempts on the afternoon.
Linebacker Cam Buffington set the tone on Wisconsin’s opening possession, dropping Badgers quarterback Colton Joseph for a five-yard sack. Buffington led the Iowa defense with eight total tackles.
Wisconsin mounted its most serious scoring threat late in the second quarter. Running back Abu Sama III gained 11 yards on a third-down carry, and Joseph connected with Jaylon Domingeaux on a 41-yard completion to set up Wisconsin at the Iowa 8-yard line. The Hawkeyes stuffed three straight plays inside the 10 before stopping Joseph on a fourth-down quarterback keeper at the 1-yard line.
“They had momentum,” Buffington said, according to Hawk Central. “They’re down on the 1, just to see how the crowd popped at the end of that. If I was an opponent at Kinnick Stadium, it’d be hard. It definitely switched for our favor.”
Linebacker Jayden Montgomery finished with six tackles, a fumble recovery and a half-sack, while Rashad Godfrey Jr. added a fumble recovery and Jacob Wallace intercepted a Joseph pass in the fourth quarter.
Brown sparks decisive offensive drives
Following the goal-line stand, the Hawkeyes took possession at their own 2-yard line while holding a 10-0 lead. Iowa responded by driving 98 yards down the field, capped by a touchdown reception by Tony Diaz to extend the margin before halftime.
“As an offense, it gives us confidence that we know they got our back and we got their back, and we want to show them that by after they do that, responding and going 98 yards,” Brown said, Hawk Central reported.
Brown, who retained the starting job following a loss to Minnesota, delivered an efficient first half with 190 passing yards, two touchdowns and only one incomplete pass, Sports Illustrated reported. Brown finished the contest without committing a turnover.
Diaz contributed four catches for 75 yards and a touchdown while adding a 20-yard carry. Tight end DJ Vonnahme also produced a multi-faceted performance, tallying five catches for 54 yards and a score alongside two rushing attempts for 10 yards and a touchdown.
The loss ended Wisconsin’s momentum following its 24-7 win over USC on Oct. 24. Both programs now sit tied at 3-2 in Big Ten play as they head into the final month of the regular season.
