Barcelona welcomes fierce rival Real Madrid to Camp Nou on Sunday night for the season’s first El Clasico, seeking to rebound from its first defeat of the campaign and extend its Spanish league lead.
The Catalan club has collected a maximum 27 points from its opening nine domestic matches under manager Hansi Flick, opening a six-point cushion over third-place Madrid, Al Jazeera reported. A victory for Barcelona on Sunday at 9 p.m. local time would push that advantage to nine points, while a win for Los Blancos would cut the margin in half and revitalize their title chase.
Barcelona enters the contest after stumbling for the first time across all competitions this season, falling 4-2 to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday. Real Madrid, meanwhile, has captured four consecutive victories across all competitions, including a dominant win over RB Leipzig on Wednesday, according to Al Jazeera.
Mourinho steps back into the spotlight
The clash marks the high-profile return of Jose Mourinho to the fixture. The 63-year-old Portuguese tactician, who was hired this summer after Madrid finished consecutive campaigns without a major trophy, previously oversaw 17 Clasico matches during a fiery first stint on the Madrid sideline between 2010 and 2013, Al Jazeera reported.
Mourinho cautioned that his squad remains in the early stages of its development under his guidance.
“People look at us like a finished product, but finished products in football are difficult because they are never finished,” Mourinho told reporters, according to Al Jazeera. “This is the start of a product. We’re in an initial phase where the coach is learning, analysing, bit by bit defining paths.”
Flick offered strong praise for his counterpart ahead of the showdown, telling reporters that he holds the “highest respect” for Mourinho’s prolonged success across European football.
“El Clasico is different. It is the best match in our sport, and everyone will watch it,” Flick said, as quoted by Al Jazeera. “It is true that we are playing for just three points, but the importance of the match goes far beyond that.”
Injuries and a crucial suspension
Both managers must navigate significant roster absences for the derby. Real Madrid travels without star attacker Vinicius Jr., who is serving the second match of a four-game league ban, The Sporting News reported. The Brazilian received a straight red card against Villarreal on Oct. 10 after pulling the hair of midfielder Nathan Saliba, drawing an extended suspension from league officials for violent conduct. Madrid will also be without injured players Rodrygo, Ferland Mendy, and Raul Asencio, according to club squad announcements reported by Madrid Voice.
Barcelona faces its own defensive crisis. Defender Jules Kounde has been ruled out after failing to recover from an ankle sprain suffered against Real Betis, joining injured teammates Eric Garcia, Andreas Christensen, and Dani Olmo on the sidelines, Barca Universal reported.
Flick is expected to field the same backline that conceded four goals in Paris, with young right-back Xavi Espart partnering central defenders Pau Cubarsi and Gerard Martin alongside left-back Joao Cancelo, according to reporting from journalist Alfredo Martinez cited by Barca Universal.
Analytics firm Opta has installed Barcelona as the favorite with a 54.4 percent likelihood of winning, compared to a 26.1 percent chance for Madrid and a 19.5 percent probability of a draw, Al Jazeera reported. What remains to be determined is whether Barcelona’s depleted backline can contain Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe-led attack, or if Mourinho can deliver a signature tactical upset to throw the La Liga title race wide open.
