PARIS — An official Pittsburgh Steelers fan festival planned ahead of the franchise’s historic game in France was canceled Thursday following recent civil unrest in Paris, officials said.
The cancellation comes just days before the Steelers are scheduled to play the New Orleans Saints on Oct. 25 at Stade de France. Despite scrapping the club-specific gathering, the NFL insists that the Week 7 regular-season contest and its own league-sponsored fan experience will proceed as scheduled.
Concerns over local unrest
Organizers cited safety issues in eastern Paris as the driving factor behind ending the event. A joint notice published Thursday explained the decision to pull the plug on the Steelers House gathering.
“Following recent events in the Bastille neighborhood, and after careful consideration, we felt it appropriate not to move forward with the planned Steelers House fan event in Paris,” the statement said.
NFL Vice President for Global Events Nicki Ewell told The Associated Press that the Steelers organization made the final call to cancel the gathering, with the league distributing the release after assisting with promotion.
Paris has experienced widespread street demonstrations and clashes in recent days. The civil unrest across the capital has been fueled by grievances over local school conditions, the rising cost of living, and national political tensions, according to SB Nation.
League moves ahead with official plans
Despite the club’s retreat, the league confirmed it will still stage its two-day NFL Fan House event on Friday and Saturday at 46 Rue Cambon in central Paris, Fox News reported. Thousands of visitors from the U.S. and Europe are expected to visit the official site.
League officials stated that operations for Sunday’s matchup remain unchanged. “There’s nothing more important from our standpoint than the teams’ security, the fans’ security, everybody involved with this game,” NFL Executive Vice President Peter O’Reilly said during the league’s fall meeting, according to Fox News.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell confirmed Wednesday that he will be present in the French capital for kickoff. Goodell discussed security protocols with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who told OutKick that the American embassy in France believes the contest “will be fine.”
Debate grows over traveler safety
The cancellation of the fan event has highlighted growing friction surrounding the trip. While football analyst Robert Weintraub noted that a large stadium provides a far more secure, hardened perimeter than an open fan gathering, others argued the league should have taken greater precautions.
Dani Watt, the wife of Steelers star pass rusher T.J. Watt, publicly questioned why the contest was not relocated, Fox News reported. Former NFL defensive back Devin McCourty also expressed concern regarding how players’ relatives traveling independently would navigate potential unrest across the city, Pro Football Network reported.
Sports commentator Mike Florio argued the NFL should have moved the contest to London rather than pushing ahead amid instability, calling the decision an example of stubbornness that takes on unnecessary hazards.
On the field, the matchup will feature Saints quarterback Tyler Shough against Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Outside the stadium, traveling supporters are left adjusting their weekend schedules while French authorities and league organizers finalize security operations ahead of Sunday’s kickoff.
