DETROIT — Dylan Larkin will not play for the Detroit Red Wings while he waits to be traded, stepping away from the lineup as talks between the franchise and interested suitors accelerate, according to multiple reports on Thursday.

Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman reported that Larkin made the personal choice to sit out until a transaction occurs, notifying the organization on Wednesday. The 30-year-old forward missed Wednesday’s team practice for what Detroit originally termed a maintenance day.

Head coach Todd McLellan confirmed Thursday that Larkin would not suit up for Detroit’s home matchup against the Chicago Blackhawks at Little Caesars Arena. McLellan noted that interim general manager Shawn Horcoff would address the situation.

Frustration boiled over after months of talks

Larkin, who originally asked for a trade during the offseason following Detroit’s 10th consecutive season without a postseason berth, believes he has fulfilled his obligations by remaining active on the ice through October, reporters noted.

His agent, Pat Brisson, confirmed the standoff Thursday afternoon. “All I can say is that Dylan’s had enough of the situation,” Brisson told the Detroit Free Press. In an additional statement provided to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun, Brisson said his team believes the player has “been very professional and cooperative through this process.”

LeBrun reported that Larkin’s camp held conversations with Red Wings leadership on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, emphasizing that the skater felt he gave the team plenty of opportunity to finalize a swap since his initial spring request.

If Detroit chooses to discipline Larkin for withholding his services, TSN reported that a team suspension would cost the veteran center $41,237.11 in lost compensation for each day he remains away.

A difficult final chapter in Detroit

The fractured relationship follows a turbulent few months for the Waterford, Michigan, native, who was drafted 15th overall by his home-state franchise in 2014 and has spent his entire 12-season NHL career in Detroit.

After news of his trade desire surfaced during the summer, the Red Wings stripped Larkin of his team captaincy. Although he returned from an injury suffered prior to training camp, local fans greeted him with loud boos during player introductions at the home opener.

In 10 games this season, Larkin posted two goals and four assists as Detroit compiled a 5-4-3 record. Across 818 career regular-season games with the franchise, he has accumulated 278 goals and 371 assists for 649 points. On the international stage, he captured a gold medal with the U.S. Olympic men’s ice hockey squad earlier in 2026.

Where trade negotiations stand

Front-office dynamics complicated earlier talks after longtime general manager Steve Yzerman vacated the position in mid-July to become a senior advisor. Horcoff took over on an interim basis with full authority to negotiate deals, but the club has maintained that it demands established NHL talent rather than purely draft picks and prospects.

Larkin holds a full no-trade clause on an eight-year contract that runs through four additional seasons following this year, carrying an annual cap hit of $8.7 million. After initially indicating interest in the Vegas Golden Knights, Minnesota Wild and Florida Panthers, he widened his approved destinations list to 10 franchises, according to the Detroit Free Press and ESPN. That group also includes the Carolina Hurricanes, Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, New Jersey Devils, Tampa Bay Lightning, Utah Mammoth and Washington Capitals, though ClutchPoints reported the list has reached 12 clubs.

Whether Horcoff can find acceptable return value swiftly remains unclear, but Larkin appears resolved to have skated in his last game for Detroit.
