Packers and Patriots set for showdown of surging playoff contenders

Both Green Bay and New England enter Sunday’s clash at Gillette Stadium with identical 5-3 records after bouncing back from slow starts to the season.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Two teams riding nearly identical midseason surges will square off Sunday afternoon at Gillette Stadium when the 5-3 Green Bay Packers travel east to face the 5-3 New England Patriots.

After both clubs stumbled out of the gate with 1-2 records, each has rebounded by winning four of its last five contests to claim the No. 7 playoff seeds in their respective conferences, Packers Wire reported. The matchup marks a rare meeting between the franchises, which have played only seven times since Super Bowl XXXI and have not met on the field since the 2022 campaign.

Battle of deep-ball passers

Sunday’s contest features two young passers known for pushing the football down the field. Patriots quarterback Drake Maye was recently recognized as the AFC Offensive Player of the Month for October, coming off a road victory over the Miami Dolphins, Patriots Wire reported. Green Bay’s Jordan Love enters the contest leading the NFL in passing yards, according to Packers Wire, and is tied for the league lead with 17 completions of 20 or more air yards, SB Nation reported.

Green Bay’s vertical passing game leads the NFL with 33 plays of 20 yards or more, anchored by wide receivers Christian Watson and Matthew Golden, who have combined for 10 receiving touchdowns. However, Packers pass catchers have also recorded 23 dropped passes this season, with Golden logging a league-high nine drops.

“Christian Watson may be the fastest receiver in the league; he’s always a big play threat anytime he touches the ball,” New England safety Kevin Byard said, per SB Nation. “He hunts explosives,” added defensive coordinator Zak Kuhr. Kuhr stressed that the Patriots must challenge those vertical shots rather than concede deep completions.

New England utilizes man-to-man coverage at the second-highest rate in the league, according to Next Gen Stats, leaning heavily on cornerbacks Christian Gonzalez and Carlton Davis III to slow opposing perimeter threats.

Turnovers and the pass rush

Ball security could heavily tilt Sunday’s outcome. Green Bay ranks second in the NFL with 15 takeaways and has forced multiple turnovers in five consecutive games, Packers Wire reported. In contrast, New England carries a minus-seven turnover differential, having committed at least one giveaway in every game this fall.

Both offensive lines also face demanding assignments against aggressive defensive fronts. The Packers rank in the top five in pressure rate under defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, with edge rushers Lukas Van Ness, Dani Dennis-Sutton and Brenton Cox Jr. all recording pressure rates of at least 16 percent. New England features its own potent rotation, getting regular pressure from Elijah Ponder, Gabe Jacas and Dre’Mont Jones, alongside interior disruptor Christian Barmore.

Injuries and outdoor elements

Health and weather may also alter game plans in Foxborough. Former Packers receiver Romeo Doubs remains on injured reserve with a shoulder injury and will miss the contest, Packers Wire reported. The Patriots face potential offensive absences as well, with running back TreVeyon Henderson dealing with an illness and wide receiver A.J. Brown and tight end Hunter Henry battling injuries. Packers starting cornerback Keisean Nixon is working through a groin injury.

Conditions at kickoff could test both kicking operations. Forecasts project temperatures around 50 degrees accompanied by gusty winds, according to Packers Wire. That may add pressure on New England kicker Andy Borregales, who has missed three field goals under 50 yards and an extra point this season, and Green Bay kicker Trey Smack, who has missed five kicks between 30 and 49 yards along with three extra points.

The Patriots will wear their all-blue uniform combination on Sunday, aiming to stay unbeaten at home this season and strengthen their footing in the crowded AFC postseason picture.
