Aston Villa hands Manchester City first league defeat behind Nicolas Jackson brace

Nicolas Jackson struck twice at Villa Park on Saturday to halt Manchester City’s unblemished start to the Premier League season and hand Enzo Maresca his first domestic loss.

Premier League front-runner Manchester City dropped points for the first time this campaign on Saturday, falling 2-1 to Aston Villa following a two-goal performance from striker Nicolas Jackson at Villa Park.

City entered the weekend having won all seven of its opening Premier League matches under manager Enzo Maresca. However, Unai Emery’s squad disrupted that pristine run, handing Maresca his first league loss while securing a third consecutive domestic triumph over the Manchester club, The Independent reported.

Jackson Capitalizes on Defensive Lapses

The home side established an early lead in the sixth minute when Jackson took advantage of an errant play by defender Marc Guehi, driving a shot into the upper netting past City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Jackson, who arrived from Chelsea during the offseason, has scored four goals across his last four league appearances for Villa, according to The Independent.

City struggled to find traction throughout the opening half, prompting Maresca to make a double substitution at halftime. He removed Guehi and Rayan Cherki, sending on Rico Lewis and Phil Foden, the latter of whom had been held out of the starting lineup despite notching a hat trick in Champions League action earlier in the week.

The adjustments briefly paid dividends. Seven minutes after the restart, Erling Haaland pulled City level by directing a header into the net off a cross delivered by Iliman Ndiaye. The strike marked Haaland’s seventh consecutive Premier League contest with a goal, The Independent reported.

Villa Answers to Seal Upset

City’s parity proved short-lived. In the 60th minute, Villa substitute Ibrahim Mbaye sent a low delivery into the penalty box toward Jackson. The Senegalese forward directed a sharp attempt on target that slipped beneath Donnarumma and rolled into the net to restore the hosts’ advantage, Football Muse reported.

“It was incredible, we got the win which is the most important thing,” Jackson told TNT Sports after the match. “Man City are a strong team, the league leaders. Hopefully now we forget about this one and focus on the next one.” He added that the squad’s growth under Emery “is just the beginning.”

The loss ended City’s bid to match Chelsea’s record of nine straight victories to open a Premier League season, according to Football Muse. Villa also became the first club since Liverpool in 2016 to claim three straight league victories against Manchester City, having also won four consecutive home games against the side.

Hostile Reception and Title Race Implications

The fixture marked Manchester City’s second away match in the league since an independent commission found the club guilty of numerous financial breaches the previous month, a verdict City has formally appealed, The Independent reported. The home supporters created an antagonistic environment, directing chants accusing the club of cheating throughout the 90 minutes.

While Manchester City remains in first place with 21 points, reigning league champion Arsenal can pull level on points by defeating Everton at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday afternoon, The Independent reported. Aston Villa, which started the league season winless in its first four matches, has now collected three victories across its past four Premier League fixtures.
