TOKYO — Square Enix has pushed back the launch of the next “Final Fantasy XIV” expansion, titled “Evercold,” setting a new release date of Feb. 23, 2027, director and producer Naoki Yoshida announced Saturday during the MMORPG’s Fan Festival keynote in Tokyo.

Early access for players who pre-order will begin four days earlier on Feb. 19, 2027, according to presentations monitored by gaming outlets including PCGamesN and Nova Crystallis. The expansion had originally been slated for late January 2027. Yoshida apologized to attendees with an onstage bow, explaining that the three-week postponement was necessary to polish extensive system revamps and ensure the studio delivers on its quality standards.

New Zephyr job and setting detailed

During the presentation, Square Enix unveiled the Zephyr, the expansion’s second new combat job following the previously revealed Bastion tank, Eurogamer reported. The Zephyr serves as a physical ranged damage dealer armed with a crossbow and accompanied by an avian familiar named Nephele. Originating from the northwestern mountains of Ilsabard, the class begins at level 90 with quests starting in Gridania, operating exclusively in the game’s newly introduced Evolved Combat Mode.

The expansion transports players to the Fourth, one of the 13 dimensional reflections of the game’s primary world. Narrative details previewed at the event highlighted several realmships, including the agricultural vessel Sessrymnir and the wind-harnessed Skiðblaðnir. The storyline will introduce new characters such as the runesmith Visna, a ship commander named Lagertha, and the Köttr, an insular race of feline artisans. Returning companions Alphinaud and Estinien will also accompany the player character on the journey, Nova Crystallis reported.

Major systemic and raid overhauls

Square Enix outlined several sweeping gameplay adjustments designed to reduce daily player pressure and introduce greater flexibility. Progression is shifting toward an updated Adventurer Activity system structured around weekly milestones rather than mandatory daily routines. A new Auto Content Balancing mechanic will allow players to tackle three post-introductory zones and their accompanying dungeons in any preferred sequence while dynamically scaling difficulty and rewards.

Battle content is also undergoing significant restructuring. Square Enix announced a new Fierce raid difficulty that bridges the gap between Normal and Savage tiers, PCGamesN reported. High-end crossover content includes “Beyond the Lifestream: Fated Collision,” an eight-player raid series linked to the “Final Fantasy VII Remake” project featuring artwork by Tetsuya Nomura, as well as an “Evangelion” collaboration titled “Ghosts of Desire.”

To ease time commitments, future 24-player alliance raids will be split into two separate duties rather than a single lengthy run. High-end players will also receive eight-player Savage variants of alliance raid bosses. Additionally, the developers introduced the Gauntlet of Power, a flexible four-player boss rush mode available from level 51 upward that pits parties against up to five random encounters drawn from a catalog of more than 200 past dungeon bosses without downscaling player abilities.

Pre-orders and upcoming milestones

Pre-orders for the expansion across digital platforms and physical merchandise editions open on Nov. 4, 2026, Square Enix confirmed. A PC performance benchmark software that includes expanded character creation features is scheduled for release in December, according to PCGamesN.

Regional matchmaking tests are scheduled to roll out to North America and Europe on Nov. 10. Square Enix also announced that “Final Fantasy XIV” has officially eclipsed 35 million registered accounts worldwide across its supported platforms.
