GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Green Bay Packers overcame two early turnovers Thursday night, reeling off 21 unanswered points behind quarterback Jordan Love to build a 27-13 second-half lead over the Carolina Panthers at Lambeau Field.
Green Bay ran into trouble on the opening kickoff when returner Coleman Owen was stripped by Carolina’s Jackson Kuwatch, according to reports from ClutchPoints and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Nick Hampton recovered the loose football for the Panthers, setting up an eight-yard drive that ended with a 39-yard field goal by Ryan Fitzgerald after Green Bay’s pass rush forced a third-down stop. ClutchPoints credited defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt with the sack, while the Journal Sentinel reported it was recorded by linebacker Lukas Van Ness.
Packers trade early blows before pulling away
Green Bay responded promptly on its second possession. Love engineered an eight-play, 56-yard series, capping it with a 12-yard touchdown pass to tight end Tucker Kraft. The extra point failed when the kick hit the left upright; the kicker was identified as Trey Smack by the Journal Sentinel and Tyler Smack by Touchdown Wire, leaving the Packers with a 6-3 edge.
Carolina answered with a long scoring drive to regain the lead early in the second quarter. Running back Chuba Hubbard finished the sequence with a touchdown run, pushing Carolina ahead 10-6. Touchdown Wire described Hubbard’s score as a six-yard run, while the Journal Sentinel reported he scored on a one-yard plunge off tackle.
Green Bay coughed up another turnover when receiver Christian Watson fumbled after a third-down catch, giving Carolina possession near midfield. However, Carolina could not capitalize and punted after three plays.
Surge follows Christian Watson injury scare
Starting from their own 10-yard line, the Packers turned to the deep passing game. Love found Watson downfield for a 53-yard reception to the Carolina 26-yard line. Watson suffered an injury on the play and was transported to a local hospital for a chest X-ray, according to an Amazon broadcast report cited by the Journal Sentinel. Watson subsequently returned to Lambeau Field in uniform on the sideline, the newspaper reported.
Following Watson’s catch, Savion Williams rushed around the right end for 18 yards, setting up a one-yard touchdown run by Josh Jacobs. Smack converted the extra point to move Green Bay ahead 13-10.
Momentum tilted further in Green Bay’s direction moments later when Packers linebacker Ty’Ron Hopper intercepted a pass from Panthers quarterback Bryce Young at the Carolina 43-yard line. Love quickly guided the offense into scoring position, delivering a 24-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Golden to push the Packers’ lead to 20-10 with 3:32 remaining before halftime.
Defense limits Carolina in second half
Green Bay kept rolling after halftime. Following a brief drone delay, Love connected with Jacobs for a four-yard touchdown reception, extending Green Bay’s scoring streak to 21 straight points and making it 27-10.
Carolina trimmed the deficit late in the third quarter. Hubbard broke through the secondary for an 18-yard gain, and a 17-yard completion to tight end Mitchell Evans pushed Carolina into the red zone. The Packers halted the drive when Van Ness recorded a third-down sack on Young, forcing the Panthers to settle for a 50-yard field goal from Fitzgerald.
The Packers entered Thursday’s contest without starting offensive linemen Sean Rhyan and Travis Glover, who were ruled out due to ankle and knee injuries, respectively. Green Bay was seeking a rebound after falling 20-17 to the Detroit Lions on Oct. 25, while Carolina arrived at Lambeau Field following a 43-13 loss to Tampa Bay.
