England captain and Bayern Munich forward Harry Kane captured the 2026 Ballon d’Or on Monday, securing football’s most prestigious individual award following a prolific scoring campaign in Germany, multiple outlets reported.
Kane, 33, returned to England for the awards ceremony, where he finished ahead of La Liga stars Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal to be recognized as the world’s best men’s player over the prior 12 months, according to Get Spanish Football News.
Dominance in Munich and on the world stage
The honor capped a historic run for Kane, who became the first Bayern Munich player to take home the Ballon d’Or since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge won the prize in 1981, OneFootball reported. Kane led the German top flight in scoring during the 2025-26 season, recording 36 goals in 34 league appearances.
Across all competitions for Bayern Munich that season, Kane scored 61 goals in 51 matches, according to OneFootball. His productivity propelled him to 102 goals in just 100 Bundesliga appearances. On the international stage, the striker also added six goals in seven matches for England at the 2026 World Cup.
Tributes quickly followed the announcement. Real Madrid midfielder and England teammate Jude Bellingham posted congratulations on his official Instagram account celebrating Kane’s milestone, Get Spanish Football News reported.
A prophecy fulfilled from north London
Kane’s victory prompted renewed interest in an exchange from late 2019 between the striker and his former Tottenham Hotspur manager, José Mourinho. The conversation, filmed for the Amazon documentary “All or Nothing: Tottenham Hotspur,” resurfaced across social media following the ceremony, SB Nation reported.
During their early meeting, Mourinho told Kane that while the sport held English football in high esteem, global audiences often viewed the marquee stars as competing elsewhere. According to the footage, Mourinho told Kane, “The world looks to English football with an incredible respect, but they still think the movie stars of football belong to other places.”
Mourinho pledged to elevate Kane’s global standing, while Kane stated his desire to match the level attained by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, SB Nation reported. Although Tottenham failed to win silverware during Mourinho’s tenure, Kane remembered the Portuguese tactician during his acceptance speech on Monday, publicly thanking him alongside other former coaches.
Future secured in Germany
Kane’s ascent to the top individual honor in soccer also followed quiet interest from other European giants. Spanish club Barcelona made preliminary inquiries to Kane’s representatives last summer while seeking a new center-forward, transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano reported via Barca Universal.
Barcelona sought attacking reinforcements after Robert Lewandowski departed at the end of his deal and Ferran Torres was sold to Paris Saint-Germain for 50 million euros. The Catalan club explored Kane as an alternative after an effort to land Atlético Madrid forward Julián Alvarez stalled, according to Romano.
Kane appreciated the interest but chose to remain in Germany, where he recently signed a contract extension keeping him at Bayern Munich through 2029, Barca Universal reported. The agreement features fixed gross wages reaching up to 25 million euros per season.
With his long-term club future settled and the Ballon d’Or in hand, Kane turns back to Bayern Munich’s domestic and European title defenses as the current season unfolds.
