As the NFL advances into Week 7 of the 2026 season, fantasy football managers face trimmed roster options with the Buffalo Bills, Washington Commanders, Los Angeles Chargers, and Jacksonville Jaguars all idle on byes, according to The Sporting News. The reduced player pool places greater weight on target volume, snap shares, and defensive matchups across starting lineups.
Wide receiver target shares dictate decisions
Managers navigating wide receiver slots are weighing recent usage trends against defensive resistance. ClutchPoints highlighted Carolina Panthers wideout Jalen Coker as an upside WR3 play against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Coker bounced back from a quadriceps injury to secure six receptions for 97 yards on 13 targets against Philadelphia, lifting his season totals to 24 catches for 319 yards in four games. Tampa Bay enters allowing 237.7 passing yards per game and nine passing touchdowns.
Pittsburgh Steelers rookie Germie Bernard has also surfaced as an appealing PPR flex option, ClutchPoints reported. With teammates Michael Pittman Jr. and Roman Wilson on injured reserve, Bernard has registered 17 catches for 167 yards on 21 targets across his past two games. The Steelers face a New Orleans Saints secondary that has conceded 256 passing yards per contest and 10 passing scores.
A Thursday night showdown between the Chicago Bears and New England Patriots presents competing outlooks. Chicago rookie Luther Burden III caught all eight of his targets for 95 yards in Week 6 with quarterback Caleb Williams back under center. However, Sports Illustrated noted Burden logged a season-low 39 percent snap share, running 19 routes on 45 dropbacks. When comparing Burden with New England’s A.J. Brown, Sports Illustrated recommended starting Brown, pointing to his 76 percent snap share and team-high 10 targets in his Week 6 return from an ankle injury.
Conversely, analysts advise caution on Bears receiver Rome Odunze, who managed only three catches for 39 yards in Week 6 and has been held to three or fewer receptions in five of six contests, according to ClutchPoints. Indianapolis Colts receiver Josh Downs and Tampa Bay’s Chris Godwin were also tabbed as bench candidates by ClutchPoints due to difficult defensive pairings and suppressed scoring totals.
Backfield splits shape running back outlooks
In the backfield, defensive vulnerabilities offer opportunities for split-workload runners, according to analysis from The Big Lead. Pittsburgh running back Rico Dowdle was named a start recommendation for the Steelers’ matchup against New Orleans in Paris. The Saints have surrendered 28.7 half-PPR points per game to running backs and 12 total touchdowns, both league highs. Dowdle averaged 5.7 yards per carry in Week 6 after missing three games with a dislocated toe, and Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy indicated both Dowdle and Jaylen Warren will remain heavily involved.
The Big Lead also identified Minnesota Vikings running back Jordan Mason as an RB2 option against the Indianapolis Colts. Mason was designated to return from injured reserve following thumb surgery to face a Colts defense yielding 22.0 half-PPR points per game to opposing backs.
Tougher matchups prompt sit advice elsewhere. The Big Lead recommended benching Tennessee Titans back Tony Pollard against a Cleveland Browns defense permitting just 14.6 half-PPR points per game to running backs. Seattle Seahawks back Emanuel Wilson was also discouraged as a fantasy play against Kansas City, as head coach Mike Macdonald noted Zach Charbonnet could return from a knee injury to cut into Wilson’s workload.
Lineup statuses will continue to crystallize as teams release final injury designations ahead of kickoff.
