Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany was hospitalized on Friday after collapsing while observing a training session for the club’s reserve team, the German club announced.

Kompany, 40, was at the team’s Säbener Straße training facility in Munich when the medical emergency occurred. German outlets Bild and Sky TV reported that he was transported by ambulance, while soccer publication All Out Soccer reported an air ambulance touched down on the facility grounds.

“Kompany is undergoing thorough examinations in hospital and will remain under medical care,” Bayern Munich said in an official statement. “His coaching staff will oversee training and match activities until further notice.”

Struggles With Illness Leading Up to Collapse

The sudden hospitalization follows a week of health problems for the Belgian coach. Kompany had been fighting a viral infection that affected his legs and caused hip issues, according to team officials and German press agency dpa.

During a 6-1 victory over RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga last Saturday, the normally energetic manager remained seated on the bench throughout the contest. Bild reported that Kompany needed to lie down on a sofa at the stadium at halftime and after the final whistle. He subsequently missed training sessions on Monday and Tuesday, as well as a mandatory pre-match news conference, where assistant coach Aaron Danks filled in to explain that the manager needed rest at home.

Despite the illness, Kompany returned to manage Bayern’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal in the Champions League on Wednesday night. Speaking after that match, Kompany acknowledged that he had strained himself to stay on the job.

“As a manager, you always want to do everything and give it your all,” Kompany said, according to dpa. “I caught quite a nasty virus last week; naturally, I didn’t listen to my body, and at some point my body just said: ‘Right, that’s enough now!'”

Club Pledges Full Support

Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl affirmed that the club would grant Kompany as much recovery time as necessary.

“Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority,” Eberl stated. “We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure he makes a speedy recovery. Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and all the time he needs.”

Eberl added that the club holds complete confidence in the remaining coaching staff to manage squad operations during Kompany’s absence.

Support quickly poured in from across European soccer following the announcement. Manchester City, where Kompany spent 11 seasons as a central defender and captained the team to four Premier League titles, published a public message on social media wishing him a swift recovery. Burnley, which Kompany managed from 2022 to 2024 before moving to Munich, along with upcoming European opponent Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, also sent messages of support.

What Comes Next

Bayern Munich is scheduled to travel to face Freiburg in a Bundesliga match on Sunday, Oct. 25. Assistant coach Danks is expected to take charge of the team from the sideline.

Club officials have not provided a timeline for Kompany’s hospital release or his expected return to coaching duties as doctors continue to evaluate his condition.
