A chaotic weekend of college football disrupted the national hierarchy once again, though the very top of the rankings managed to avoid the turmoil as Miami held onto the No. 1 ranking in the latest US LBM Coaches Poll released Sunday.

The Hurricanes preserved their status as the nation’s premier team following a dominant victory over Pittsburgh, capturing 67 of the 74 available first-place votes, according to USA Today. Ohio State remained at No. 2 after an open week, securing six first-place ballots, while Georgia moved up to No. 3 during its own bye week.

Shifting Fortunes in the Top Five

Indiana climbed to No. 4 after surviving a 13-6 defensive struggle against Michigan, pulling away with a victory in overtime, USA Today Sports reported. Utah completed the top five, ascending four spots to No. 5 after grinding out a 21-13 win against 16th-ranked Houston. The victory placed the Utes alone in first place in the Big 12 standings and put them in the top five for the first time since Dec. 1, 2019.

Utah is now one of only three undefeated teams remaining in the Football Bowl Subdivision, USA Today noted. Notre Dame advanced two positions to No. 6, while undefeated UCLA climbed to No. 7, which marks the program’s highest standing since the 2014 preseason poll. The Bruins also earned the final remaining first-place vote.

Kentucky rose four spots to claim the No. 8 position, matching the school’s highest ranking since September 2022. Alabama returned to the top 10 at No. 10 after a hard-fought contest against Texas A&M.

Top Contenders Stumble on the Road

The weekend proved costly for several high-ranking programs that entered Saturday with unblemished records. Brigham Young tumbled six spots to No. 9 after falling 39-31 in double overtime at Central Florida, suffering its first defeat of the season just a week after beating Notre Dame, according to USA Today Sports.

Texas Tech also saw its spotless record disappear in emphatic fashion. The Red Raiders dropped nine places to No. 14 after being beaten 37-24 on the road by Cincinnati, managing only one late touchdown in a difficult red-zone showing, Sports Illustrated reported.

Meanwhile, Texas bounced back into the upper tier of the poll, leaping seven spots to No. 11 after snapping a two-game losing streak by defeating Mississippi. The Rebels fell to No. 12 following the road loss in Austin.

Tennessee endured a sharp setback as well, dropping six places after South Carolina kicked a 48-yard field goal as time expired to seal an upset over the Volunteers, USA Today Sports reported.

Poll Turnover and Conference Tests Ahead

Big Ten programs suffered significant damage outside the top tier. Iowa and Southern California each plunged 10 spots following road losses to unranked foes Minnesota and Wisconsin, respectively, according to Sports Illustrated. USC barely remained ranked, holding the No. 25 spot, while Oregon plummeted completely out of the Top 25 following a 21-10 defeat at Illinois that dropped the Ducks to a 4-3 record.

Arizona capitalized on the movement, entering the rankings at No. 21 following a convincing victory against Iowa State.

With November approaching, the conference races face immediate tests next week, including Texas Tech hosting newly ranked Arizona as contenders attempt to secure their postseason positioning in an increasingly volatile season.
