DETROIT — Coming off their bye week, the Detroit Lions return to Ford Field on Sunday afternoon for a pivotal Week 7 divisional meeting against the Green Bay Packers, testing an overhauled defensive philosophy against one of the league’s hottest passing attacks.
The matchup marks the first NFC North contest of the season for Detroit (3-2). The division has emerged as one of only two in the NFL where every franchise carries a winning record, headlined by the undefeated 5-0 Minnesota Vikings, Lions Wire reported. The Packers entered Sunday’s game with a 4-2 record, setting up an intense fight for positioning.
A dramatic shift in the secondary
Detroit enters the game buoyed by its dominant 45-21 road victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Week 5. That win featured a major strategic transformation orchestrated by defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard. After leaning on zone coverage for roughly 80 percent of snaps during the initial four games, the Lions played man-to-man coverage on 50.9 percent of defensive snaps against Arizona, according to team coverage data cited by Detroit Sports Nation.
Cornerback Roger McCreary thrived under the aggressive scheme, matching a single-game franchise record established in October 2000 by Bryant Westbrook by recording six pass breakups. Detroit’s defense complemented the coverage with five sacks while limiting the Cardinals to 56 rushing yards.
“That’s one of my strengths, playing man,” McCreary said, as quoted by Detroit Sports Nation. “We’re not going to do it every play, we’re going to mix it up of course, but that’s going to be our identity.”
The unit also benefited from rookie Keith Abney II, who logged his first career interception while making his starting debut at safety, following a players-only meeting organized by pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson. The Lions defense is also set to receive another boost with the return of All-Pro safety Brian Branch, the Detroit Free Press reported.
The Jordan Love challenge
Despite those gains, stopping Green Bay presents a steeper hurdle. Packers quarterback Jordan Love has excelled against Detroit in recent meetings, tallying seven touchdown passes without an interception across his past three starts against the Lions, according to the Detroit Free Press. His perimeter options include deep threats Christian Watson and Matthew Golden.
Detroit’s aggressive front — powered by Hutchinson and Alim McNeill — aims to disrupt Love directly. The Detroit Free Press reported that the Lions entered the contest leading the NFL in sacks and pacing the league in quarterback hits per game, a stark change from 2025 when Detroit failed to bring down Love even once across two defeats.
On offense, quarterback Jared Goff looks to protect the football against an aggressive Green Bay takeaway unit anchored by safety Xavier McKinney.
Division race heats up
Detroit head coach Dan Campbell embraced the challenge of opening the division schedule at home after watching rivals clash over the opening six weeks.
“It’s pretty exciting,” Campbell told reporters, as reported by Lions Wire. “It feels like it’s been a while. … You feel like everybody else has played each other and we haven’t had a chance to play anybody in our division yet.”
The late-afternoon contest airs nationally on Fox, with Kevin Burkhardt and Tom Brady in the broadcast booth. On the roster front, linebacker Devin White remains sidelined on injured reserve due to an arm injury, Pride of Detroit reported, while offensive tackle Giovanni Manu was ruled out due to a non-football injury. What remains to be determined is whether Detroit’s newfound identity in man coverage can successfully withstand the Packers’ downfield attack and keep pace in the crowded NFC North.
