When Christian McCaffrey jogged off the field and into the locker room during the second quarter Sunday in Atlanta, the entire framework of the San Francisco 49ers’ offense seemed to unravel with him. McCaffrey’s subsequent return early in the third quarter prevented an immediate catastrophe, but the sequence served as a stark reminder of how heavily the undefeated team relies on its star running back.
San Francisco opened the game showing precisely why McCaffrey is central to head coach Kyle Shanahan’s game plans. On a game-opening, 10-play sequence, McCaffrey dominated the ball, culminating in a one-yard touchdown leap on fourth-and-goal, NBC Sports reported. McCaffrey handled four carries for 29 yards on that march and caught two passes from Brock Purdy, according to the network, which calculated he produced 69 yards of offense despite a five-yard penalty against tackle Trent Williams.
The San Francisco Chronicle recorded McCaffrey’s opening work slightly differently, noting 68 total yards across six touches on that first drive. The All-Pro running back later caught a short five-yard pass to open San Francisco’s second possession, the Associated Press reported, before leaving the game with a thigh injury.
Momentum swings without the focal point
McCaffrey spent several minutes inside the medical tent and tested his mobility along the sideline before heading indoors, sitting out roughly the last 20 minutes of the first half, the Chronicle noted. Fox’s television broadcast initially designated him questionable to return.
In McCaffrey’s absence, the offense experienced instant volatility. Rookie running back Kaelon Black provided an explosive spark with a 30-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to widen the lead to 14-3. Black’s score marked the longest run by a San Francisco player since McCaffrey recorded a 65-yard touchdown during the 2023 opener against Pittsburgh, according to the Chronicle.
Yet that spark proved fleeting. Black lost a fumble on the next possession, abruptly shifting game momentum. Outlets offered differing accounts of the turnover’s exact location: the Chronicle reported the fumble occurred on San Francisco’s 29-yard line and led to an Atlanta field goal, while the Associated Press reported the fumble took place at the Atlanta 29. Either way, the turnover helped open the door for the Falcons, who took a 19-14 lead during the third quarter when quarterback Michael Penix connected with Kyle Pitts for a touchdown, ProFootball Talk reported.
Roster depth tested amid existing absences
The sudden deficit underscored why McCaffrey’s presence is so urgent for an otherwise rolling San Francisco squad. The 49ers entered the matchup with a 6-0 record, but their passing depth was already severely depleted. Starting wide receivers Mike Evans, sidelined by Achilles and rib issues, and Deebo Samuel Sr., out due to a hamstring injury, were both ruled out prior to kickoff, according to the Associated Press.
Without those primary perimeter options, losing McCaffrey stripped Purdy of his most dependable checkdown target and ground threat. Although Black demonstrated breakaway speed, the operational rhythm that McCaffrey provides as both a rusher and receiver remains difficult for Shanahan to duplicate.
McCaffrey re-emerged on the field for San Francisco’s first possession of the second half, though his initial touch resulted in a two-yard loss, the AP reported. While his return stabilized the sideline, it remains to be seen whether the veteran can withstand a full workload or if the lingering thigh issue will force San Francisco to adjust its offensive formula in the weeks ahead.
