Jim Harbaugh takes blame as Chargers fall to 0-5 with loss to Broncos

Los Angeles head coach Jim Harbaugh voiced regret over a critical fourth-down gamble following a 23-17 defeat against Denver that extended the team’s winless start.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — The Los Angeles Chargers fell to 0-5 on the season Sunday after collapsing in the fourth quarter of a 23-17 loss to the AFC West rival Denver Broncos at SoFi Stadium, marking the franchise’s worst start since 2003.

Los Angeles held a seven-point advantage in the second half before Denver mounted a 14-point rally in the final frame. Speaking to reporters after the defeat, Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh shouldered responsibility for a failed fourth-down conversion that shifted momentum, while admitting he struggled to find the right words for his winless locker room.

“Yeah, I don’t know what that message is,” Harbaugh said, according to Chargers Wire. “It’s just in the players to just fight their hearts out, to play, give it everything they have. That’s the only way. That’s the best way.”

Costly Fourth-Quarter Decisions

The Chargers grabbed a 17-10 lead late in the third quarter when running back Kimani Vidal broke loose for a 42-yard touchdown sprint, The Comeback reported. However, the game turned sharply with 10:33 remaining in the fourth quarter when Harbaugh opted to go for a fourth-and-1 play from the Chargers’ own 41-yard line.

The attempt failed. Five plays later, Denver quarterback Bo Nix connected on a touchdown pass to Courtland Sutton to tie the contest at 17-17. The Broncos then took the lead on a Wil Lutz field goal following a fumble by Los Angeles quarterback Justin Herbert.

Harbaugh expressed deep frustration with his decision to roll the dice on fourth down inside his own territory.

“Yeah, it was the wrong decision. I can’t think of a time I’ve been more mad at myself.”

Herbert’s Turnovers and Offensive Woes

The final four possessions for the Chargers ended in frustration: a turnover on downs, a fumble, an interception by Denver safety Brandon Jones, and a final sack to conclude the game, according to The Comeback. Herbert finished the day completing 14 of 24 passes for 121 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.

Herbert has now recorded nine turnovers through five games, including seven interceptions, tying him for the league lead. Despite the miscues, Harbaugh defended his quarterback on Monday, saying the signal-caller was forced into risky situations while attempting to rally an offense coordinated by Mike McDaniel.

“There are definitely times when he was trying to make a play, and too many times this season, there’s been that desperation time,” Harbaugh said, as reported by The Athletic and The Comeback. “That’s what I’d attribute that to. Doing anything and everything he can.”

Harbaugh added that he would not ask Herbert to adjust his aggressive mindset, saying, “I’m not going to tell him anything different. He’s doing anything and everything that he can to help us win, and I applaud those that do that.”

Depleted Weapons and What Comes Next

The Chargers operated with limited receiving options against Denver. Star wideout Ladd McConkey was held out of regular action despite being healthy enough to dress, ClutchPoints reported. Harbaugh explained Monday that McConkey, who previously suffered a rib injury in week one against the Arizona Cardinals and later hurt his foot prior to week four, was reserved solely for an emergency role.

Without McConkey on the field, tight end Charlie Kolar led Los Angeles in receiving with three receptions for 37 yards. Running back Keaton Mitchell added three catches for 18 yards, while wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling totaled 22 yards on two grabs.

The schedule offers little relief for Los Angeles as the team attempts to avoid a 0-6 start, a slump the franchise has not endured since finishing 1-15 in 2000. Up next, the Chargers will travel to Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday to take on the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs.
