High school athletes across the United States registered record-breaking individual performances, postseason championships and major statistical milestones during competition held between Oct. 12 and Oct. 17.
Regional media outlets across Indiana, Washington state and Michigan opened fan voting this week to recognize standout varsity athletes who fueled tournament runs and regular-season victories, according to local news reports.
Record days on the gridiron
On the football field, individual playmakers produced historic nights. In Indiana, an Edgewood running back generated a historic offensive display during a 55-19 victory over Indianapolis Scecina, The Herald-Times reported. The rusher piled up 320 yards on the ground—the third-highest single-game rushing total in program history—and reached the end zone six times. The performance established a new school record for rushing touchdowns in a single game, eclipsing the previous mark of five shared by Josh Collier in 2008 and Rod Ogan in 1982. By scoring 36 points, he also tied Lavon Bellemy’s school record set in 2018 as Edgewood scored its most points in eight years.
In Washington state, high school football players put up staggering numbers in South Sound matchups, according to the Tacoma News Tribune. Mount Tahoma defensive end Teaven Jones dominated in a 38-0 victory against Central Kitsap, collecting six sacks to lead a suffocating defense. Bethel running back Deron Williams spearheaded his squad with 222 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries in a 30-7 win over Spanaway Lake. Orting running back Shiron Seniours delivered five total touchdowns in a 52-24 triumph over Steilacoom, compiling 144 rushing yards, three rushing scores, a receiving touchdown and a 60-yard kickoff return for a score.
Passing attacks also flourished. Tumwater quarterback Jake Reid threw three touchdown passes on three attempts for 107 yards in a win over Aberdeen, while White River senior quarterback Chaz Strickland connected on 19 of 26 passes for 258 yards and five scores against Kent-Meridian. In Michigan, Inland Lakes football standout Landon Fenstermaker accounted for five touchdowns against Rogers City, the Cheboygan Daily Tribune reported.
Championship breakthroughs and court dominance
In fall tournament action across Southwestern Indiana, several programs secured historic trophies, according to The Courier & Press. Evansville Christian junior setter Anna Mitz collected 121 assists over three postseason matches, including 45 against third-ranked Tecumseh, helping the program capture its first volleyball sectional championship. Evansville North volleyball also celebrated its first sectional title behind junior hitter Annabelle Freels, who recorded 19 kills and finished the match point against Reitz.
Soccer and cross country competitors also produced crucial postseason moments. Senior forward Sydney Traylor scored two goals for top-ranked Evansville Memorial in a 4-1 girls soccer regional title win over Batesville, The Courier & Press reported. Castle goalkeeper Elliott Woodland preserved a clean sheet across two postseason wins and delivered a decisive penalty kick save to help defeat Bloomington South in the regional final.
On the cross country trails, Reitz senior Carter Zieren claimed an individual sectional title at Gibson Southern with a winning time of 15:13.54, while Heritage Hills freshman Kylee Waninger won the girls sectional at Jasper in 18:09.73.
Voting deadlines and upcoming competitions
Fan polls honoring these athletes will conclude across different schedules this week. The Herald-Times announced its poll closes at noon on Thursday, Oct. 22. In Southwestern Indiana, balloting for the weekly award presented by Orthopaedic Associates remains open until 5 p.m. CDT on Friday, The Courier & Press reported. Meanwhile, polls hosted by the Tacoma News Tribune and the Cheboygan Daily Tribune close on Thursday at noon and 9 p.m., respectively, as teams prepare for their next round of postseason contests.
