The mother of “Breaking Bad” actor RJ Mitte has spoken publicly about the agonizing moment she discovered her son dead inside his Texas residence earlier this week, offering insight into his final days as loved ones mourn his unexpected passing.

Mitte, best known for portraying Walter “Flynn” White Jr. on the acclaimed AMC drama, died Monday, Oct. 12, in Brownsville, Texas, at age 34. A representative for the actor confirmed to media outlets that the cause of death was suicide, while the official manner of death remains undetermined pending final autopsy results.

Mother recalls discovery and final interactions

In an interview with NBC News, Mitte’s mother, Dyna Mitte, recounted attempting to reach her son by phone at roughly 11 a.m. on Monday. Because he frequently slept until midday, she initially felt no alarm when he failed to pick up. She purchased lunch and drove to his house to deliver the meal, only to discover his body inside.

Dyna Mitte told NBC News that her son did not leave any message behind. “There was nothing left behind. No notes,” she said, adding that she believed his death may have been a decision made in the “spur of the moment.”

She revealed that the previous weekend had been difficult for him, noting that a close acquaintance had shared personal information that had deeply upset him. For roughly three months leading up to his death, she had encouraged him to seek counseling, but he had insisted he was managing things on his own. Looking back, she expressed deep regret that she had not insisted more forcefully that he see a mental health professional.

Dyna Mitte explained that her decision to speak publicly stemmed from a desire to spare other parents similar grief, saying that if her words could assist even one person navigating emotional distress, that is what her son would have wanted.

Family and co-stars honor Mitte’s legacy

On Friday, relatives and community members gathered for a memorial service at the Mitte Cultural District in Brownsville. Mitte’s younger sister, Lacianne Carriere, delivered an emotional eulogy, describing how her older brother stepped into a parental role early in her life after an accident left their mother temporarily paralyzed.

“RJ Mitte was my older brother but I not only just lost a brother, I lost my father,” Carriere said during the service, urging anyone enduring personal hardship to seek help and lean on others.

Former castmates from “Breaking Bad” also shared remembrances. Mitte was diagnosed with cerebral palsy as a child, an experience he brought directly to his character across five seasons of the show from 2008 to 2013, later becoming an outspoken advocate for performers with disabilities.

Bryan Cranston, who portrayed his father on the series, revealed that he spoke with Dyna Mitte following the tragedy. In a tribute posted on social media, Cranston expressed sorrow and disbelief over the loss of a young man he met when Mitte was only 14. Anna Gunn, who played his onscreen mother, praised Mitte’s warmth, humor and dedication to representation, calling the loss of someone with such promise profoundly heartbreaking. Co-stars Aaron Paul, Dean Norris and Bob Odenkirk similarly honored his kindness and enduring impact.

What drove Mitte’s actions remains partly unclear as relatives await formal medical examiner findings. Family members continue to urge individuals dealing with emotional pain to reach out for support.
