The Chicago Bears are slated to regain their starting quarterback on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, as Caleb Williams prepares to step back under center following a three-game absence caused by a torn hamstring, according to reports from ESPN and NFL Network.
Williams, the 24-year-old former No. 1 overall pick, sustained the injury during a 9-3 Week 2 defeat against the Minnesota Vikings on Sept. 20, an outing in which he was carted off the field in the rain. While the quarterback labeled the issue “pretty serious” and declined to specify its grade, he completed a full week of practice without experiencing any physical setbacks, Fox News and ESPN reported.
Weathering a turbulent stretch
Chicago managed to post a 2-1 record during Williams’ absence, but the team relied on a shifting quarterback rotation that eventually unraveled. In Week 3, veteran Case Keenum guided Chicago to a 27-7 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. Backup Tyson Bagent took over the following week, steering the Bears to a 23-12 win against the New York Jets before enduring a steep decline in Week 5.
That drop came during a 31-7 loss to the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. Chicago’s offense sputtered to just 246 total yards, including 165 passing yards and 81 on the ground, ClutchPoints reported. The Bears surrendered five turnovers in that matchup, throwing three interceptions and losing two fumbles before Keenum replaced Bagent in the fourth quarter.
That error-filled performance underscored why Williams’ presence remains essential to Chicago’s structural game plan. Across his two appearances before the injury, Williams accumulated 407 passing yards, two touchdowns and one interception, according to The Sporting News.
Rebuilding offensive rhythm
Williams took first-team practice repetitions throughout the week, appearing sharp during Thursday and Friday sessions after an initial Wednesday walk-through, sources told ESPN. Bears head coach Ben Johnson announced late Friday that the young passer was “on track,” though OutKick noted that his return remains contingent on completing pregame warmups without complications.
Williams also signaled his mindset heading into Sunday by reposting a video on TikTok that featured a defiant quote from the television series “The Bear,” referencing the public doubt that followed his injury exit in September, ESPN reported.
High stakes in a tight division
Williams returns to a 3-2 squad navigating a congested division race. Fox News reported that Chicago is currently tied for second place in the NFC North alongside Green Bay and the Detroit Lions, trailing the 5-0 Vikings. In contrast, The Sporting News observed that the Bears sat at the bottom of the divisional standings after finishing in the inverse position a year earlier.
Facing the 2-3 Falcons in Atlanta provides Chicago with an opportunity to halt consecutive defeats and reestablish an efficient passing attack under Johnson’s direction. Whether Williams can instantly recover his prior mobility and rhythm will be determined when the Bears take the field for Sunday’s 1 p.m. ET kickoff.
