Early access for the single-player campaign of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 went live Friday, sparking an unusually enthusiastic reception from long-running fans and setting franchise records on digital PC storefronts ahead of the full launch next week.

According to early user metrics on Steam, player sentiment has placed the new installment among the best-received titles in the military shooter franchise in years. Insider Gaming reported that initial user reviews sat at 81.15 percent positive across roughly 900 submissions, marking the highest score for any Call of Duty release on the platform since 2015’s Black Ops III. Windows Central later observed the score hovering near an 82 percent “Very Positive” benchmark as more participants weighed in.

A cinematic finale for the reboot series

Developed by Infinity Ward, the release serves as the conclusion to the rebooted Modern Warfare narrative that began in 2019. The story mode takes players to Korea and spans 16 main missions, Radio Times reported. The campaign features returning protagonist Captain Price facing off against a primary antagonist portrayed by actor Mads Mikkelsen.

The positive player reception follows several years of criticism directed at recent franchise installments, where story campaigns were often viewed by players as rushed while developers prioritized live-service modes such as Warzone and Zombies. Windows Central reported that professional critics, including reviewers at IGN, have highlighted the campaign’s focused narrative execution, technical fidelity, and emotional weight.

Windows Central writer Cole Martin published spoiler-free early impressions, praising the storytelling and noting, “I repeatedly found myself gasping at every turn, surprised by the hows and whys that led up to the events of this blockbuster finale.”

Early enthusiasm faces launch test

Industry observers cautioned that the current wave of feedback represents an early, specialized cross-section of the gaming audience. Early campaign access is available primarily to pre-order customers who paid ahead of time to explore the single-player narrative a week before the general public gains access.

Because early purchasers are typically dedicated series enthusiasts, initial ratings tend to skew higher than general post-launch feedback. The campaign makes up only one portion of the broader release package, which also features an updated DMZ mode, competitive multiplayer, and esports integration.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled for its complete global launch on Oct. 23. Whether the game can sustain its early goodwill among the wider community will become clearer once millions of players test the competitive multiplayer servers and battle royale integrations.
