The New England Patriots have signed former Los Angeles Chargers running back Hassan Haskins to their practice squad, ESPN insider Adam Schefter reported, as the organization navigates a growing list of injuries across its offensive depth chart.
The move provides the Patriots with experienced depth after rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson suffered a high ankle sprain that is expected to sideline him for multiple weeks, sources told Schefter. With Henderson unavailable, New England faces a reduced rotation behind starting running back Rhamondre Stevenson, making Haskins an immediate insurance policy for both offensive snaps and special teams duties.
Haskins entered the NFL as a fourth-round selection by the Tennessee Titans in 2022 before spending the past two seasons in Los Angeles, HEAVY reported. While with the Chargers, Haskins primarily contributed on kick coverage and return units, recording 232 yards across nine kick returns. On offense, he totaled 136 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground, along with seven receptions for 62 yards and one touchdown catch over his two seasons with the franchise.
Offensive line reshuffled after Campbell sprain
The backfield adjustment arrives while New England also manages turbulence along its offensive line. Starting left tackle Will Campbell sustained an MCL sprain in his right knee during Sunday’s victory against the Las Vegas Raiders, a source confirmed to ESPN. Campbell exited in the second quarter when a Raiders defender drove Stevenson backward into Campbell’s leg on a running play.
Although Campbell is expected to miss game action and is listed as week-to-week, the injury is not believed to be as severe as the Grade 3 MCL tear he suffered in the same knee last November, according to ESPN. Rookie first-round selection Caleb Lomu took over at left tackle after Campbell was ruled out, logging 49 offensive snaps and surrendering only one quarterback hurry, SB Nation reported.
Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel expressed confidence in Lomu’s ability to protect quarterback Drake Maye alongside guard Alijah Vera-Tucker. Vrabel told reporters that Lomu handled the assignment well, noting that avoiding negative attention on the line is typically an encouraging sign for a young lineman.
Roster moves ahead of Week 6 matchup
The addition of Haskins offers stability while the Patriots continue balancing short-term replacements with returning veterans. New England has already lost multiple offensive linemen to season-ending injuries, though offensive tackle Marcus Bryant became eligible to resume practice after starting the season on injured reserve with a designation to return, ESPN reported.
At wide receiver, Vrabel said there is a possibility that A.J. Brown could be activated from injured reserve in time to play. What remains to be determined is how quickly Haskins can integrate into the playbook before the Patriots host the New York Jets on Sunday at Gillette Stadium.
