Antonio Banderas and Nicolas Cage are set to lead the fifth season of HBO’s anthology crime series “True Detective,” with cameras scheduled to start rolling in 2027, according to reports from Variety and TheWrap.

The upcoming season pairs the two veteran actors on screen for the first time in their careers. Cage will portray detective Henry Logan, while Banderas has been cast as Rai García. Cage previously tipped his involvement during an appearance at New York Comic Con, confirming reports that he had been in discussions for the lead role since August.

A New Coastal Setting

Departing from the icy, remote expanses of Alaska featured in the previous season, the fifth installment will unfold around Jamaica Bay, New York. The body of water, located along the southern edge of Long Island, stretches across sections of both Brooklyn and Queens, creating an intricate jurisdictional backdrop for the central investigation.

Issa López, who guided the fourth season, “True Detective: Night Country,” returns to write, direct, and serve as showrunner. López told TheWrap that while the story shifts to the East Coast, the narrative will stay anchored within the same continuity as earlier iterations of the series, drawing specific narrative threads back to the events depicted in Ennis, Alaska.

“It’s the same universe, and the magical realism is my brand, so it will be there,” López told TheWrap, noting that references in the upcoming season will lean more toward the events of Season 4.

López previously highlighted the thematic continuity of the anthology to the New York Post, emphasizing that the unsettling occurrences established early in the franchise continue to reinforce the idea that “there’s something bigger than us and darker than what we can imagine behind the scenes.”

Executive Ranks and Franchise Milestones

López is executive producing the season alongside writer Daniel Zelman, Mari Jo Winkler, and Kathleen McCaffrey. Both Cage and Banderas will also take on executive producer titles, joining franchise stalwarts Nic Pizzolatto, Cary Joji Fukunaga, Richard Brown, Steve Golin, Woody Harrelson, and Matthew McConaughey.

Since premiering in 2014 with McConaughey and Harrelson, “True Detective” has earned 41 Emmy nominations and six wins across its four iterations. Later chapters featured lead pairings of Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams in Season 2, followed by Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff in Season 3. Season 4, starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, drew 12.7 million cross-platform viewers, making it the most-watched chapter in the show’s run, according to figures released by HBO. Foster also earned an Emmy for her performance.

For Cage, whose decades-long film career includes an Academy Award for “Leaving Las Vegas,” the HBO project represents only his second lead television role after starring in the live-action series “Spider-Noir.” Banderas, an Oscar nominee known for “Pain and Glory” and “The Mask of Zorro,” previously earned two Emmy nominations for his television work in “And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself” and “Genius: Picasso.”

Production on the new season will not get underway until 2027. HBO has yet to announce additional supporting cast members, an official premiere date, or deeper details surrounding the specific criminal case Logan and García will investigate.
