WARSAW, Poland — Polish security agencies launched an investigation Sunday after police received information regarding a potential plot to attack Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, government officials said.
Karolina Galecka, a spokesperson for the Interior Ministry, announced on social media that Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski and Special Services Coordinator Tomasz Siemoniak directed law enforcement and intelligence bodies to take immediate steps. Representatives from the national police, the State Protection Service and domestic intelligence gathered Sunday morning for an emergency conference at the Internal Security Agency counterterrorism center to coordinate a response.
High Alert and Intelligence Warnings
Security officials emphasized that they are treating the warning as a credible danger. Jacek Dobrzynski, a spokesperson for the minister overseeing Poland’s intelligence services, stated that investigators viewed the probability of an attempted attack as substantial, The Guardian reported. Dobrzynski noted that security bodies across the country have faced an expanding volume of varied threats in recent months.
Dobrzynski said the State Protection Service originally obtained the threat warning before transferring the intelligence to the police force, according to The Guardian. Private Polish broadcaster Radio Zet separately reported that law enforcement officers were alerted through an email outlining the threat, Al Jazeera noted.
Government spokesperson Adam Szlapka confirmed that Tusk was briefed on the development early Sunday morning, describing the details as exceptionally concerning, according to The Guardian. Kosiniak-Kamysz, who also serves as Poland’s deputy prime minister, and Tusk had not publicly addressed the intelligence as of Sunday afternoon.
Tensions and Domestic Security Strain
The reported threat arrives during a period of heightened domestic vigilance across Poland. Authorities were already operating on elevated alert following three violent school incidents within four days in Mazovia province, the central region surrounding Warsaw. Those attacks left multiple individuals injured, including children, and resulted in the death of a school caretaker on Thursday, media reports said.
The alert also unfolds amid ongoing regional friction linked to the war in neighboring Ukraine. Poland has served as a central logistical hub and key Western supporter of Kyiv following the full-scale invasion launched by Moscow. In September, Tusk publicly warned that Russia appeared likely to escalate hybrid operations against NATO’s eastern frontier.
At the time, the Polish prime minister warned that Moscow was preparing potential strikes using drones or missiles against European allies assisting Ukraine, aiming to erode international solidarity. The Russian government has denied harboring any such intentions.
Following Sunday’s interagency meeting, Dobrzynski told journalists that security leaders determined additional measures would be deployed, private broadcaster Polsat News reported. Officials have not disclosed the specific origin of the threat or whether any suspects have been detained, and the investigation remains underway.
