High school football teams across the country took the field Friday night for high-stakes playoff clashes and pivotal district finales, producing a flurry of blowouts, tight upsets, and offensive showcases.

From postseason brackets launching across California and Colorado to round-two battles in Illinois and district title tune-ups in Central Texas, Friday’s results set up next week’s postseason matchups and brought several seasons to a sudden close.

Dominant district finales in Texas

In Central Texas, regional powerhouses Westlake and Lake Travis wrapped up their regular-season schedules with lopsided victories in District 25-6A play, according to the Austin American-Statesman.

Westlake, holding the top seed in Division II, defeated Stony Point 68-33 to improve to 9-1 overall and finish district competition undefeated at 6-0. Running back C.J. Jones gained 110 yards on the ground and scored two touchdowns, while Isaiah Mills contributed two rushing scores. Westlake carried a 52-20 advantage into halftime, supported by quarterback Patton Jones, who ran and threw for scores. The defense was paced by nine tackles each from Travis Olson and Clayton Buchanan. Westlake now moves on to host Hays in the bi-district playoff round.

Meanwhile, Division I top seed Lake Travis shut out Westwood 58-0 to end the regular season at 5-3-1 overall and 4-2 in district play, the Austin American-Statesman reported. Quarterback Jason Carter threw four touchdown passes and totaled 238 passing yards alongside a rushing score. Running back Teddy Lofgren led the ground effort with 98 yards and a touchdown, while receiver Westin Smith caught two touchdown passes.

California brackets take shape

Playoff competition swung into full gear throughout Southern California, where top seeds established command and several underdogs claimed narrow victories, according to scores compiled by the Los Angeles Times.

In the Los Angeles City Section, top-ranked Granada Hills Kennedy secured a 57-22 win over Fairfax, and top-seeded Jefferson posted a 43-0 shutout against Gardena. Los Angeles Roosevelt also cruised to a 56-20 triumph over Diego Rivera. However, top-seeded East Valley fell in a 38-34 thriller against eighth-seeded TEACH Tech.

Other California playoff contests came down to single scores. Sherman Oaks Notre Dame edged Capistrano Valley 20-19, Chaminade squeezed past Corona del Mar 20-17, and South Torrance survived Riverside Notre Dame by a 34-33 margin. Bellflower held off Cerritos Valley Christian 37-35, while Oxnard Pacifica outdueled Bishop Amat in a high-scoring 56-50 shootout.

Midwest and mountain state postseason results

In Colorado, the Colorado High School Activities Association opened postseason play across all seven classifications, the Coloradoan reported. Top-eight seeds in Classes 3A through 5A held first-round byes, opening the stage for seeds 9 through 24.

Among the Class 5A matchups, 14th-seeded Fairview outlasted 19th-seeded Arapahoe 56-49 in a dramatic back-and-forth contest. Elsewhere in the bracket, ninth-seeded Ralston Valley topped Castle View 34-24, Regis Jesuit rolled past Fossil Ridge 49-21, and 18th-seeded Legacy handled Horizon 41-7.

In Illinois, the postseason journey ended for Pekin High School in a 33-21 loss to Normal West during a second-round Illinois High School Association matchup, the Journal Star reported. Normal West, which entered at 10-1, built an initial 13-0 edge and maintained a 27-7 lead by halftime. Pekin wide receiver Dylan Anderson scored two touchdowns by taking direct snaps in the wildcat formation, including a fourth-quarter run that cut the margin to 12 points, but the Dragons could not complete the comeback.

Postseason schedules across several states will resume Saturday afternoon with remaining first-round contests, followed by regional and bi-district matchups next week.
