Early iPhone Duo buyers report inner screens cracking along hinge

Customers say the folding display failed within hours of unboxing, as early teardown tests point to a potential flaw inside the hinge mechanism.

Just days after Apple launched its first foldable smartphone, early adopters are reporting that the device’s main display is fracturing directly down the center seam.

The issue affects the newly released iPhone Duo, which went on sale Friday. Across social media platforms and the iPhone Duo Reddit community, multiple buyers shared photographs and videos showing identical damage: a vertical fracture splitting the inner screen where the phone bends, frequently accompanied by a bright, stuck bar of white pixels across the panel.

Breakages reported within hours

For several owners, the catastrophic failure took place mere hours after taking the phone out of the box. Mashable reported instances of customers encountering the issue across the United States, Australia and China. One Australian customer noted the display fractured in under six hours after being folded fewer than 20 times.

In other cases, customers reported screens breaking while they were still running the initial device setup, according to 9to5Mac. The publication noted it had verified roughly 10 distinct reports of identical hinge cracks over the launch weekend, though the full extent of the problem remains unknown given that Apple likely shipped hundreds of thousands of devices.

Apple has not issued official public guidance on folding technique or acknowledged a systemic defect. The tech giant has generally provided immediate replacements to shoppers who brought damaged devices directly to company retail stores, though some who purchased through mobile carriers encountered delays or disputes over repair coverage, 9to5Mac reported.

Teardown reveals possible hinge failure

Independent durability tests quickly sought to determine why the screens were breaking along the exact same line. YouTuber CuriousHagi managed to recreate the display failure during physical testing before disassembling the handset to inspect the underlying hardware, The Verge reported.

According to the teardown, the iPhone Duo features an intricate folding assembly relying on a central gear mechanism connected to two distinct varieties of linking hinges. A thinner link located toward the middle of the phone fractured at a small structural notch, the YouTuber found. In addition, scraping marks on a nearby support plate indicated the internal component may have snagged during regular folding, creating upward force against the flexible screen.

Early software and hardware hurdles

The screen fractures compound standard early-adopter friction surrounding the new form factor. Tech reviewers have noted that third-party applications frequently appear unoptimized on the internal 4:3 panel, leaving awkward borders and unused blank margins, CNET reported. Industry analysts, however, expect app developers to adjust quickly because the external cover screen shares the exact same aspect ratio as the large inner canvas.

While software updates can be delivered over the air, a physical flaw in the hinge mechanism would pose a steeper challenge. Industry watchers quoted by MacRumors and 9to5Mac suggested Apple is likely examining returned handsets to determine whether the screen failures stem from an isolated manufacturing batch or require adjustments on the assembly line.

It remains to be seen whether Apple will initiate a formal replacement program or issue updated care guidance as more customers receive preordered units throughout the coming weeks.
