A spontaneous subway commute has turned a Brooklyn bar owner into an online sensation after she traded rapid-fire comedic jabs with former late-night host Conan O’Brien on a moving train.

Debbie Shields, 68, who operates Confessions Bar in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, stepped into internet stardom following her appearance on an episode of the digital series “SubwayTakes with Kareem Rahma,” published Tuesday. The brief segment recorded aboard New York City’s F train has captivated social media users, amassing over 1.3 million views by Sunday.

“One minute and 29 seconds changed my life,” Shields told CBS News New York.

The encounter began when Shields and her companion, Tony, transferred trains during their daily commute. After spotting Rahma and O’Brien filming the popular mobile talk show, Shields asked her friend to save her seat and walked directly over to the camera crew, The New York Times reported. Shields took a seat and greeted O’Brien, who was in the middle of debating an unconventional opinion about soap statues.

Improvised history on the F train

When host Kareem Rahma asked the pair whether they already knew each other, O’Brien playfully claimed that he and Shields were once married. Rather than breaking character, Shields immediately embraced the fictional premise and expanded on it without hesitation.

During their 89-second exchange, the two concocted a fictional shared history that included two imaginary sons. When O’Brien inquired about the children, Shields told him that one son was in medical school while the other was behind bars, according to the video broadcast. O’Brien apologized for failing to provide financial support or visit them, prompting Shields to reassure him by claiming that pictures of him were displayed throughout the home.

When O’Brien declared that their imaginary relationship was the happiest marriage and the best year and a half of his life, Shields quickly countered that she had heard the exact same compliment from her other three former husbands. The punchline left the veteran comedian laughing uncontrollably on the subway bench.

Surging crowds and future projects

The impromptu performance resonated widely across social platforms, bringing sudden international attention to the neighborhood bar owner. Confessions Bar, named because customers tend to open up more as they drink, saw its Instagram following surge by more than 7,000 users following the broadcast, according to social analytics firm SocialBlade.

The Bedford-Stuyvesant venue quickly drew capacity crowds of well-wishers and new patrons over the weekend, CBS News reported. In response to the viral moment, the bar unveiled a new cocktail named “The Baby Daddy O’Brien,” garnished with an orange twist to honor the comedian’s trademark hair.

Shields, a mother of three who regularly hosts karaoke and comedy shows at her establishment, said she has never had formal improv coaching. However, she told The New York Times that the positive reception has encouraged her to consider stepping onstage to perform stand-up comedy herself.

O’Brien was equally enthusiastic about the brief collaboration. He told New York Magazine that he was astonished by how quickly Shields delivered sharp comebacks, adding that he would gladly team up with her for a television sitcom, a restaurant venture, or a traveling two-person comedy tour.

Shields said O’Brien may drop by Confessions Bar for a future karaoke night, though an appearance has not yet been formally scheduled.
