Following a chaotic weekend in which five top-ten programs fell, college football plunged into Week 8 on Saturday with contenders across the country fighting to preserve their championship and playoff hopes.

The early afternoon slate immediately produced tension for ranked teams. Unbeaten Texas Tech fell behind 24-6 at halftime on the road against Cincinnati after surrendering 231 yards in the opening half, College Sports Wire reported. Meanwhile, Auburn attempted to mount an upset against LSU, trimming a deficit with a Byrum Brown touchdown run before LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt hit Jackson Harris for a 70-yard touchdown strike to quickly restore a two-score advantage, according to College Sports Wire.

Playoff Chases and ACC Showdowns

In Dallas, No. 23 SMU hosted California in an Atlantic Coast Conference battle with major postseason implications. According to The Big Lead, the Mustangs entered the matchup at 5-1 under head coach Rhett Lashlee, seeking to remain in the hunt for a double-digit win season and an ACC title spot after dropping only one game to Louisville earlier this fall. SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings brought momentum into the contest, having produced at least two touchdown passes in five of six games while avoiding interceptions in consecutive outings.

California arrived with a 3-4 record and questions under center between quarterbacks Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele and Jackson Brousseau following a 41-7 loss to Wake Forest, The Big Lead reported. However, the Golden Bears relied on defensive back Kingston Lopa, who entered the afternoon tied for the national lead with five interceptions, in an effort to disrupt the Mustangs’ rhythm.

College Football News highlighted other key league games across the schedule, including a prime-time ACC clash featuring Virginia Tech traveling to face Clemson at Death Valley. Virginia Tech brought an aggressive pass rush against Clemson quarterback Tait Reynolds, while Clemson sought to protect home turf in a contest projected to test both lines of scrimmage.

Quarterback Changes and Conference Battles

Injuries also reshaped lineups across multiple conferences on Saturday. At the Rose Bowl, Michigan State faced UCLA without its top two signal-callers, College Sports Wire reported. Starter Alessio Milivojevic and backup Cam Fancher were both sidelined due to knee injuries, forcing true freshman Kayd Coffman into his first career collegiate start after not attempting a pass all season.

In other action, Indiana traveled to Michigan to challenge new starting quarterback Tommy Carr, while Kansas State anticipated the return of quarterback Avery Johnson in a Big 12 contest against Arizona State, according to reports from College Sports Wire and College Football News.

Group of Six contenders also faced crucial tests with potential College Football Playoff bids at stake. Boise State traveled to face Washington State, looking to capitalize on recent upsets elsewhere in the national landscape, College Football News reported.

What Lies Ahead

The night schedule promises additional drama as Tennessee travels to take on South Carolina as an underdog, Texas visits Ole Miss, and Utah hosts Houston under the lights, according to College Sports Wire. Whether Saturday yields another massive reshuffling of the national rankings will depend on which contenders navigate hostile road environments as conference races enter their decisive stretch.
