High school football teams across the country took the field Friday night for Week 9 action, as schools entered the decisive stretch of the regular season or opened the postseason under Friday night lights.

The slate of games on Oct. 23 featured high-stakes district battles, regional championship decisions, and the kickoff of state tournaments across several states, including Ohio, Iowa, Alabama and Texas.

Highland protects lead in Ohio conference showdown

In Ohio, Highland traveled to Hudson Memorial Stadium seeking an outright crown in the Suburban League National Conference. Highland entered the contest at 8-1 overall and 6-0 in league play, having already locked up at least a share of the title in its debut season in the division, according to the Akron Beacon Journal.

Highland jumped out to a 13-0 advantage over Hudson by halftime. Kicker Jonah Kowza opened the scoring with field goals of 32 and 38 yards, the newspaper reported. Defensive back Chatham Phillips intercepted Hudson quarterback Hayden Lipinski twice in the first half to disrupt the Explorers’ offensive rhythm. Highland pushed its cushion to two scores when quarterback Colton Wadle connected with Evan Foust on a 13-yard touchdown pass with 38 seconds remaining in the second quarter.

Hudson, which entered 7-2 overall, looked to rally in the third quarter after Anthony Paolucci returned a punt to the Highland 25-yard line with 5:45 left in the period, the Akron Beacon Journal reported. Highland entered the night ranked first in Division II, Region 5, having secured a first-round postseason bye, while Hudson entered fifth in Division I, Region 1.

Iowa opens postseason brackets in smaller classes

In Iowa, Friday marked a split format across the state. Week 9 served as the opening round of the Iowa High School Athletic Association playoffs for Classes 2A, 1A, A and eight-player football, while Classes 3A, 4A and 5A contested their regular-season finales, The Des Moines Register reported.

Large-school powerhouses established early leads during Friday’s action. Dowling took command early against Marshalltown, building a 22-0 lead in the opening quarter behind a 7-yard touchdown run from Henry Smid, according to The Des Moines Register. Meanwhile, the Dragons grabbed a quick 14-0 advantage over Des Moines Roosevelt.

The Iowa postseason schedule also featured top-ranked programs opening title pursuits, with No. 2 Van Meter hosting Albia and Roland-Story facing Grand View Christian in Class 2A, while top-ranked Iowa City Regina took on Columbus Catholic in Class 1A, according to the newspaper.

Regional crowns on the line in Alabama and Texas

In Alabama, Montgomery-area programs clashed in regional matchups that could determine two regional championships, according to The Montgomery Advertiser. Friday marked the final week of regional competition for the majority of programs in the Alabama High School Athletic Association.

Key matchups across the River Region included Carver-Montgomery facing Opelika, Prattville hosting Vestavia Hills, and Trinity Presbyterian taking on Montgomery Academy, the newspaper reported.

In West Texas, programs entered the heart of district schedules across the greater San Angelo area, with postseason positioning tightening across all classifications, according to GoSanAngelo.

As Friday’s results are finalized, bracket pairings and official seedings for state playoff tournaments across the nation will take shape heading into the weekend.
