Airbnb is stepping in to end long chore lists for travelers, announcing updated checkout guidelines that prohibit hosts from requiring renters to perform major cleaning duties such as washing dishes, starting laundry or stripping beds before departing.

The updated rules apply to reservations booked on or after Nov. 20, Airbnb announced on its website. The lodging platform said house requests must remain reasonable and avoid duties that demand substantial time or effort, or tasks typically handled by professional cleaning staff.

Limits on checkout tasks

Under the revised policy, Airbnb draws a firm distinction between minor courtesies and excessive chores. Hosts may still ask guests to place dirty plates in the sink or separate garbage from recycling, but they cannot demand that visitors wash and put away dishes or haul bags of trash to offsite dumpsters, CBS News reported.

Airbnb noted that exceptions will be granted for unique circumstances, such as adhering to local water restrictions during droughts or securing garbage inside bear-proof containers in wilderness areas, according to CNET.

The policy update also restricts hosts from levying direct fines on travelers, mandating instead that both parties resolve issues through standard dispute channels, The Shade Room reported. In addition, all expectations must be clearly established at the time of booking rather than added later.

For years, travelers have vented frustration across social media and review forums over paying substantial cleaning fees while still facing strict chore checklists before checkout. Clint Henderson, managing editor at The Points Guy, told NBC News that excessive checkout demands had eroded the company’s appeal compared to hotels.

“Why am I going to stay at Airbnb when I have to do chores?” Henderson said, noting that guests are often paying steep fees on top of nightly rates.

Host backlash and price concerns

The revised regulations have sparked immediate resistance among some property operators. More than 5,000 people signed an online petition urging Airbnb to reverse course, arguing that basic tidying represents standard personal responsibility rather than professional cleaning service, CBS News reported.

Other hosts expressed concern that the restrictions would increase operating expenses and attract pests. On Airbnb’s community forums, some operators warned they might need to raise cleaning fees by 30 to 50 percent to compensate cleaners for longer visits, CNET reported. Michelle, a host in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, wrote that the financial burden had been shifted directly onto homeowners.

Other operators acknowledged the need for balance. Gabriel Valk, an Airbnb host in Greenville, South Carolina, told NBC News that while light tidying feels like common courtesy, he understood why travelers paying separate fees feel frustrated by extensive task lists.

Broader shifts in pricing rules

The checkout changes follow previous adjustments Airbnb introduced to address consumer dissatisfaction with hidden costs. The company introduced an optional total-price display in November 2022 before mandating upfront total pricing worldwide in April 2025, according to CNET.

Airbnb warned that hosts who repeatedly violate the chore limitations risk penalties. The company stated it may restrict a property’s search visibility or display a formal violation notice directly on the listing page if unreasonable demands persist.
