Airbnb is overhauling its checkout guidelines to prohibit property owners from assigning heavy cleaning duties to departing visitors, addressing years of traveler frustration over paying cleaning fees while facing lists of household chores.
Under the revised policy, which takes effect for all bookings made on or after Nov. 20, hosts cannot require guests to strip bed linens, wash and store dishes, do loads of laundry, or haul rubbish off the premises, according to company announcements cited by ABC News and TechCrunch.
New boundaries on checkout tasks
The home-sharing marketplace stated that travelers who already pay cleaning charges should not be forced to take on duties typically handled by professional cleaning staff. Property owners will still be allowed to ask for minor cooperation, such as setting used dishes in the sink or collecting dirty towels in a pile.
“House rules help guests understand what hosts expect, but we’ve heard from our community that they can be confusing, onerous and hard to manage,” Airbnb said in a statement quoted by the BBC. “So, we’ve redesigned them to make them easier to discover and clearer to set, alongside a new policy that keeps requests reasonable, with no surprises.”
Under the new framework, hosts can select from seven standardized house rules and append additional reasonable requests. However, property operators may not introduce new mandates after a stay is reserved through in-person demands, text messages, or signs hung inside the home, Engadget reported. The platform is also prohibiting hosts from levying independent fines on visitors and restricting the use of supplementary rental contracts unless mandated by law or local homeowners association bylaws.
Airbnb noted that it will permit narrow exceptions in certain environments, such as requiring travelers to shorten showers amid regional droughts or secure waste in wildlife-resistant containers in areas populated by bears.
Friction between hosts and travelers
The policy shift lands after extended public backlash from travelers who complained on social media about burdensome checkout checklists. Scrutiny mounted as viral online posts, including videos by creators inspecting vacation rentals and critiquing guests for displaced items, ignited parodies and debates over short-term rental standards.
The modifications have triggered pushback among some property operators. On platform discussion boards, several hosts expressed frustration that restricting cleanup requirements would inflate turnover expenses and treat private properties like commercial hospitality operations.
“Guests are given complete freedom to be lazy while the hosts bear the risk,” one longtime host posted on a community forum, as reported by TechCrunch. The host argued that expecting visitors to manage dirty linens and dinnerware preserves the balance between personal home sharing and traditional hotels, warning that the constraints could push some long-standing operators away from the site.
The move marks the company’s latest effort to resolve customer friction regarding rental costs. In May 2025, Airbnb introduced default total pricing displays that incorporate fees across global searches, following earlier reports that hundreds of thousands of operators had reduced or eliminated their cleaning surcharges.
Airbnb stated that listings with noncompliant guidelines will be flagged, though hosts will have the opportunity to appeal flagged requests through an internal review procedure.
