LIVERPOOL, England — Liverpool overturned a two-goal first-half deficit on Tuesday night to defeat Villarreal 4-3 at Anfield, maintaining a flawless record through the early stages of the UEFA Champions League league phase.

Manager Andoni Iraola elected to rest several key starters, leaving high-priced attacking trio Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Bradley Barcola on the bench. The calculated gamble nearly unraveled early as defensive blunders put the hosts in a deep hole, but an electric performance from 18-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha and a brace from midfielder Alexis Mac Allister powered Liverpool’s revival.

Early defensive struggles

Villarreal stunned the home crowd just four minutes into the contest. A misdirected back-header from Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk went straight to striker Georges Mikautadze, who slotted a low finish past Alisson Becker. Van Dijk raised his hands in immediate apology, but the defensive troubles continued.

Before the half-hour mark, Nathan Saliba threaded a pass through Liverpool’s malfunctioning offside trap. Kostas Tsimikas kept the attackers onside, allowing left back Sergi Cardona to collect the ball and double Villarreal’s lead. According to The Independent, the opening 30 minutes marked one of the rockiest stretches of Iraola’s tenure, with his team appearing passive while managing heavy rotation ahead of domestic fixtures.

The Anfield fightback

Liverpool began their turnaround in the 36th minute when Mac Allister flicked in a near-post corner delivered by Tsimikas. Just before halftime, Ngumoha made his first decisive imprint on the contest. Shifting past defenders on the right flank, the teenager floated an inviting cross to the back post, where defender Ronald Araujo headed home the equalizer.

Araujo was substituted at halftime for Wirtz as Iraola shifted Ryan Gravenberch into the right-back role. Liverpool seized the lead after the break when Ngumoha used his speed and power to skip past two defenders along the right wing and flashed a cutback into the penalty area, where Mac Allister smashed a six-yard shot off the underside of the crossbar.

According to ESPN, Ngumoha became the youngest player on record in the Champions League since 2008-09 to tally at least five dribbles, 10 touches in the opposing box and an assist in a single match. The Independent noted he was also the youngest Liverpool player to provide two assists in a match since Michael Owen.

Wirtz extended the advantage to 4-2 when he drove a shot into the far corner off a pass from Cody Gakpo, who was making his first appearance following a monthlong absence. Villarreal generated a tense conclusion when substitute Tani Oluwaseyi finished at the back post three minutes from time, but Liverpool held on for the win.

What the managers said

The result marked Liverpool’s third straight win in all competitions and left them second in the Champions League table, according to The Independent. Villarreal suffered their seventh consecutive away defeat in European competition.

Villarreal manager Inigo Perez, a former assistant to Iraola, lamented his team’s missed opportunities amid the Merseyside rain. “We didn’t know how to manage the emotion tonight,” Perez remarked, as reported by The Independent, noting that his squad’s own defensive errors undercut an otherwise potent attacking display.

Iraola commended Mac Allister’s poise under pressure and praised Ngumoha’s rapid development on the right flank. “The character, when you are 2-0 down and not playing well, he doesn’t panic,” Iraola said of Mac Allister.

Liverpool now turn their focus back to domestic action as they prepare to face Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday, while Villarreal will look to address their European road struggles in their upcoming continental fixtures.
