NEW YORK — British pop star Harry Styles surprised concertgoers at Madison Square Garden on Friday night by performing an unreleased song written in memory of his former One Direction bandmate Liam Payne on the second anniversary of Payne’s death.
Styles, 32, introduced the acoustic ballad, titled “What Is Enough,” during the encore of his New York show, Billboard and Rolling Stone reported. The performance came two years to the day after Payne died at age 31 on Oct. 16, 2024, following a fall from a third-floor hotel balcony in Argentina.
A quiet tribute in an arena
Addressing the arena audience before beginning the song, Styles noted his emotional ties to the storied venue and looked back on the relationships that shaped his career. “I feel incredibly lucky to get to play these shows here in New York, and this building means a lot to me,” Styles said, according to concert video cited by the New York Post. “And two years ago today, I lost one of those friends.”
Styles gestured toward a banner in the rafters commemorating his past performances at the arena, adding that many collaborators and loved ones contributed to his milestones. “I’m sure a lot of you have been through similar things. I hope you haven’t,” Styles told the crowd, according to Variety. “But, really, it’s just about looking after each other.”
He then told the audience he wanted to share a composition created around the time of the tragedy: “I’m gonna play you a song that I wrote for my friend about two years ago, if that’s all right with you.”
Delivered with sparse instrumentation, the performance featured lyrics reflecting on loss and Payne’s November 2024 funeral service, Variety reported. Among the lines audible in recordings were references to gathering around a fire on a Wednesday night and writing a letter just to burn it up.
Bandmates united in grief
Payne and Styles rose to global fame alongside Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson after being formed into One Direction on the television competition “The X Factor” in 2010. The group evolved into one of the top-selling boy bands in music history, securing four consecutive No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 before going on indefinite hiatus in 2016.
Following Payne’s sudden death, the four surviving members released a joint statement describing themselves as “completely devastated” by the loss of their bandmate, whom they described as a brother. They later reunited publicly for the first time in nearly nine years to attend Payne’s funeral in the United Kingdom.
Styles also honored Payne in individual tributes, remembering him on Instagram as warm and loving, with “an energy for life that was infectious.” In a subsequent interview with Apple Music, Styles opened up about navigating the public nature of grief, noting how difficult it felt to lose a friend who shared so many parallels in life.
Friday’s concert was part of Styles’ 30-night residency at Madison Square Garden during his “Together, Together” tour, launched in support of his fourth studio record, “Kiss All the Time, Disco Occasionally.” Following the debut of “What Is Enough,” Styles finished the concert with his usual encore selections, “Sign of the Times” and “Aperture.” It remains unknown whether the singer plans to release a studio recording of the tribute track.
