A retired San Francisco police sergeant fatally shot his wife, a former deputy police chief, and their adult daughter before taking his own life in an apparent double murder-suicide at their suburban Bay Area residence, authorities said.
Deputies from the Marin County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday following a 911 report of gunfire at a home on Strawberry Circle, located in an unincorporated area near Mill Valley. Upon arrival, law enforcement personnel established a perimeter and made entry, discovering three people dead inside the residence.
Officials identified the victims as Ann Mannix, 65, and her daughter Katie Mannix, 24. The suspected shooter was identified as Kevin Mannix, 68, a retired San Francisco Police Department sergeant. The Marin County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that preliminary findings indicate Kevin Mannix shot his wife and daughter before turning the firearm on himself.
A caller who was present when the gunfire erupted managed to escape the residence unharmed and contact authorities, according to sheriff’s officials. Deputies noted that law enforcement had no record of previous emergency calls to the address.
A Pioneering Law Enforcement Career
Ann Mannix was widely recognized as a barrier-breaking leader within the San Francisco Police Department. She made department history as the first woman to join and subsequently command its tactical SWAT unit. Mannix went on to serve as deputy chief overseeing the Field Operations Bureau in 2018 and later guided the Special Operations Bureau before stepping down from the force in 2021.
A fourth-generation resident of San Francisco, she also participated extensively in community organizations, serving on the board of the city’s Police Activities League and coaching youth basketball.
“Ann Mannix was a trailblazer in our department,” Louis Wong, president of the San Francisco Police Officers Association, said in a public statement. “To see their lives, and the life of their 24-year-old daughter Katie, end in such a horrific and senseless manner is a burden that weighs heavily on every officer, active and retired.”
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie also offered condolences, noting that Ann Mannix dedicated decades of service to protecting the city. San Francisco Police Chief Derrick Lew circulated an internal memo urging personnel to support one another and access department counseling services during the difficult period.
Investigation Continues
Kevin Mannix concluded a 27-year career with the San Francisco Police Department when he retired from the Taraval Station in June 2018.
Investigators stated that there was no ongoing danger to the surrounding neighborhood following Sunday’s incident. Sheriff’s detectives secured the perimeter while awaiting judicial approval for a search warrant to carry out a comprehensive examination of the property, KTVU reported. Official autopsies were scheduled for Tuesday.
Investigators have not publicly identified a potential motive behind the shootings, and authorities declined to discuss specific evidence recovered from inside the home. The identity of the 911 caller has not been officially released.
