A slate of high-stakes regular season matchups on Friday, Oct. 16, is set to shape league title races across metro Detroit, highlighted by a clash of undefeated teams in the Southeastern Conference Red Division, The Detroit News reported.

Temperance Bedford, standing at 7-0 overall and 5-0 in league play, hosts perennial contender Saline, which brings an identical 7-0 record into the division finale. The matchup marks Bedford’s first 7-0 start since 2013 and comes during head coach Dave Mifsud’s first year after moving from Woodhaven in the offseason, according to The Detroit News.

Bedford tests surprising surge against Saline

Mifsud inherited a program that had failed to finish over .500 during the prior three campaigns. Bedford earned its spotless record after shutting out Ann Arbor Huron 35-0 in Week 7, a victory fueled by two touchdown passes from quarterback Luke Whetstone to Jaxson Lestock and a 98-yard, one-touchdown rushing performance by Masyn Moran. Linebacker Everett Wingate anchored Bedford’s defensive shutout, The Detroit News reported.

Saline enters the contest averaging 49.9 points per game behind sophomore quarterback Case Campbell, who has accumulated 1,183 passing yards and 21 touchdowns without an interception while completing nearly 70 percent of his throws, according to The Detroit News. Running back Carson Cherry has tallied 787 yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground, operating behind an offensive line led by Michigan commit Louis Esposito. Saline’s passing attack also features receiver Cruz Hanson, a Grand Valley State commit with eight touchdown catches, and Western Michigan tight end commit Gabe Iadipaolo.

Rematches highlight Detroit-area schedule

Elsewhere in the region, Clarkston travels to face Harper Woods on Friday night in a rematch of an encounter from 2025. Harper Woods overcame a 21-point deficit last season to hand Clarkston its only regular season defeat. Harper Woods enters at 6-1, returning 36 veterans including five-star wide receiver and Oregon commit Dakota Guerrant, The Detroit News reported. Clarkston brings an unblemished 7-0 mark into the contest, led by signal-caller Alex Waszczenko, who has eight touchdown passes against two interceptions, and running back Kiernan Riddle, who has logged 530 yards and five scores on 42 carries.

At Ford Field, the Detroit Public School League championship will feature Detroit Cass Tech against Detroit King. Cass Tech won the regular season matchup 20-7 three weeks earlier after trailing 7-0. Running back Julian Taylor spearheaded that victory by scoring two late fourth-quarter touchdowns, including a go-ahead 48-yard burst, The Detroit News reported.

Charter school rivals square off

In the Charter School Conference Gold Division, undefeated Ecorse visits defending champion Detroit Edison. Both programs enter with 5-0 conference marks, according to The Detroit News. Ecorse relies on running backs Chrishaun Massey-Johnson and Rishon Langford-Smith, who have produced a collective 1,071 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns. Detroit Edison features quarterback Myles Matlock, who has 1,100 yards and 15 touchdowns through the air, and two-way standout Jaivon Plowden, who has gained 840 rushing yards while recording 65 tackles on defense.

Kickoffs for all four contests are scheduled for Friday evening, with the outcomes establishing conference champions and finalizing regional playoff positioning as the postseason nears.
