High school football teams across the country stepped onto the field Thursday, Oct. 8, highlighted by dramatic overtime finishes in Utah and several lopsided results across Texas ahead of a packed Friday schedule.
Overtime finishes and dominant outings in Utah
In Utah, Week 9 action featured a pair of overtime thrillers alongside several runaway victories, according to the Deseret News.
Syracuse edged Farmington 23-16 in an extra session during a Region 1 showdown. Farmington had built a 16-9 advantage late in the fourth quarter when Alton Dahl found Benson Rogers on a 64-yard touchdown strike with 8:19 remaining. Syracuse answered with 6:56 left in regulation when Jaxson White connected with Parker Moffat on a 35-yard touchdown pass to tie the score. In overtime, Jack Benoit broke through for a 10-yard scoring run to hand the Titans the victory.
Another overtime contest unfolded in Region 8, where Timpanogos squeezed past Park City 24-23. The game reached overtime deadlocked at 17 after Timpanogos kicker Luke Bergin nailed a 40-yard field goal with 28 seconds left on the clock. Park City struck first in overtime on a two-yard carry by Josh Hofer, but an unsuccessful extra-point attempt opened the door. Zack McCann answered with a one-yard touchdown run and the decisive extra point to finish the win.
Other Utah programs flexed their offensive firepower early, the Deseret News reported. Corner Canyon built a 27-point cushion in the opening quarter on the way to a 41-17 victory over American Fork. Quarterback Jaxon Pehrson threw four touchdown passes to Kelen Gold and added a 23-yard rushing score. Meanwhile, Murray built a 55-3 lead by halftime against Juan Diego, cruising to a 62-17 win behind four touchdown passes from Dru Reuss.
Dominant defensive showings also took center stage in the Beehive State. Box Elder shut out Clearfield 49-0, while Hillcrest blanked Taylorsville 49-0 to trigger the state’s 44-point mercy rule. Bountiful held Brighton scoreless in a 38-0 victory, and Northridge recorded two defensive touchdowns in a 28-0 shutout over Bonneville.
Lopsided decisions highlight Texas slate
In Texas, Thursday’s Week 7 schedule brought heavy scoring totals and commanding shutouts, according to results compiled by The Associated Press and reported by the Houston Chronicle.
Perennial power Austin Westlake cruised to a 57-0 triumph over Round Rock Westwood, while Celina produced one of the highest scoring outputs of the evening in a 70-0 rout of Frisco Independence. In San Antonio-area action, Cibolo Steele secured a 56-7 win over San Marcos.
Other programs earned decisive margins across the state:
- Amarillo Palo Duro shut out Lubbock Coronado 55-0.
- Arlington Martin took down Arlington Houston 63-14.
- South Grand Prairie defeated Irving 54-6.
- CC Ray shut out Brownsville Lopez 57-0.
Not every contest in Texas was a blowout, however. Northwest Eaton survived a tight battle to edge Keller Central 28-27, and Georgetown slipped past Killeen Shoemaker in a 13-12 defensive duel.
States prepare for massive Friday schedules
The Thursday results set the stage for a full slate of games on Friday, Oct. 9. In Washington, more than 140 games are scheduled across the state under the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, Sports Illustrated reported. The Friday slate in Washington features 18 contests between ranked opponents, including a matchup pitting No. 15 Kamiakin against No. 6 Chiawana and a battle between No. 3 Lake Stevens and No. 18 Glacier Peak.
In Western Pennsylvania, teams throughout the Beaver Valley are entering Week 7 of the high school schedule as conference races tighten, the Beaver County Times reported. Final scores and updated league standings from Friday night across the country will continue to shape the postseason landscape heading into the weekend.
